Bullet Hell games? No Thanks Ikaruga !!

in Hive Gaming6 months ago

When I was a teenager one of my favorite types of games were space shooters of the side or top-down variety. There were tons of them particularly on the Sega Genesis, which at one point in time was the only system that I had. I think they made so many of them because of the fact that those machines, even though powerful given the time period. weren't really capable of much else. Almost any time that they tried to do anything 3D, it was just more stupid than it was fun. There were some exceptions like Starfox but we were still many years away from 3D anything, let alone shooters, at that point in time.

I became quite good at many shooters including R-Type, Thunder Force 2 and 3, and Gradius just to name a few.

In the 2000's shooters kind of fell out of favor as systems became more powerful and I hadn't really heard much about them until I was introduced to a new type of shooter called "bullet hell." I was initially excited to see that the shooter genre appears to be making a comeback, but it was only a little bit into one of the more popular ones before I had to completely give up on this. I just don't have the skills necessary to play it.

I was recommended a game called Ikaruga by a friend who is considerably more hardcore than I am when it comes to gaming. I have known this guy for 30 years so I just presumed he was telling the truth. I think he WAS telling the truth but also messing with me a bit because this friggin game is TOUGH.

It's a top-down shooter that has an old school feel to it and this appealed to me immensely. I have played games in the past where you were meant to dodge all sorts of stuff flying at you in the past, this is just the norm as far as these games are concerned. I was not at all prepared for how crazy this game was though because after the introductory level, they really throw the kitchen sink at you.

There are certain parts of the game and eventually basically all of it, where you aren't actually meant to be able to dodge all the shots that are headed your way. Instead, you are supposed to change the tuning of your ship so that either the red or the white shots don't cause any damage. This sounds simple enough right, well it isn't. sometimes the red bullets are intermingled with the white and you have to decide in a flash which tuning you are going to use for your ship. Choose incorrectly and you can only take a little bit of damage before you are blown up.

Thankfully, getting killed doesn't take you all the way down to pew pew pea shooter, but it does step down your potential damage output.

To make matters even more difficult there are portions of the game where there are environmental dangers such as walls and mountains as well as other ships that are flying towards you. The environmental hazards pay no attention to your tuning and the larger ships it doesn't matter either. Thankfully, collisions with the smaller ships provided you are tuned correctly, won't cause any damage and they can actually upgrade your ship.

to get an idea about how insane this game is have a look at this 3 minute video.

While I admire people that have the reflexes to do something like this I am not one of those people, not by a long shot. So I didn't make it very far into Ikaruga before I turned it off forever and then berated my friend a little bit. He chuckled on the phone and offered to pay for the game for me. It was only $5 so I declined.

If you seriously have amazing reflexes and nerves of steel it is my understanding that Ikaruga is considered a great game. For me, this is difficult to the point of not being fun at all :)

Now that's a game I hadn't heard of in a while, but definitely knew back then...I remember trying the Dreamcast version in an emulator and quickly losing all my 5 credits in Stage 2 or 3 😅

In theory I could play through this on the arcade version to see how many it takes me to beat the game (you know, trying to complete it with the less amount of credits used)...but yeah, this game is truly insane and even with the color switching mechanic to avoid half of the bullets, the other half will still be a pain to dodge.

Honestly considering how kinda niche most other Treasure games were (Gunstar Heroes and Mischief Makers are probably their other two games that aren't as forgotten, and even then Mischief Makers is still stuck on the N64), Ikaruga's popularity on the internet is still surprising to me to this day; feels it was a reputation gained similarly to the Touhou games due to the bullet hell stuff...and maybe also because it had a surprisingly healthy amount of ports (you could even get this on the Gamecube).

Heck, there's this long-time known youtuber called DrossRoztank which, while nowadays focuses on horror stories, became known at first because of his gameplays and hilarious rage reactions...and one of the games he played was none other than Ikaruga.

So yeah, for a Treasure game, it really got to places. Might even give it a shot again after reading this post.

Cheers and thanks for sharing your thoughts! (Your friend was indeed messing with you with this recommendation lmao)

this was the same friend that was a pro gamer so I probably should have seen this coming. I've known him since I was 13 and it was only $5 so there was no real hurt feelings.

BTW thanks for the very thoughtful and insightful response. Those are rare and it is seriously appreciated!

I don't understand what that guy is saying in the video but honestly, you don't need to in order to get a kick out of how angry he gets

I could never get into this kind of game either. There's just too much going on on screen. With "normal" shooters knowing patterns helps but you can beat them with a little skill. I feel with the kind of game it's just endless repetition until you have memorized all the patterns. Plus you don't even have a chance to really appreciate the graphics and level design.

I hadn't thought about it in that regard but you are correct. When I watch videos of others playing Ikaragua it is actually a very beautiful game but you take your eyes off of your ship for just a fraction of a second in this game and blammo! you dead!

Thanks for sharing your post. I don't know the #game you mention, but I do understand what the difference is between shooting games, the old Shooters, and the ones that are Bullet Hell. In fact, I have had reflex deficiencies since I was young, so I never enjoyed frenetic games, they made me desperate, and they reminded me of my limitations, but I did enjoy watching my brother play.

Well, he doesn't like 'Bullet Hells' either, but that's another story :)

I'm kind of amazed at the reflexes of today's youths as far as games are concerned. Even with these lightning fast reactions I still think some of the old school games on NES that I mastered would frustrate the hell out of them.

I think bullet hell games are for a different kind of player than I am. I really enjoyed the shooters on the Genesis back in the day and I was quite good at them. These kinds of games are for people that are much better gamers than I am, that much is for sure.

I remember when I tried a game of this style, it was on my PS1, on a CD that contained many Nintendo games, what good memories.

any idea what the game was?

o.o wow this looks like an og game on steroids o.o. how culd u not like this. this is mostly just knowing the pathing i thinka logn with some skill
