Garden Journal September ~ Time to Harvest

in HiveGarden2 years ago

Garden Journal Sept.

September is 2 remember. One the my favorite months.

Besides that, it was my birthday last weekend, it is also the month that connects the summer with the fall… nights getting longer, the temperature gets cooler and there is a lot to harvest everywhere. Abundance of food. Like wild blackberries, figs, grapes, nuts and many more food.

We have here a neighbor fig tree, many people harvest from this tree and it has the most fantastic figs.

Besides green we also have black figs.

I love to climb in the tree to pick them. A great exercise and fantastic view in the tree. The only side effect is that my skin is very sensitive for this tree, so I have to take a shower direct after I go in the tree.

The leaves from a fig tree are worth to pick and dry them, you can use them for tea. You will be surprised how wonderful it taste!

Also from the garden I get a lot of food, I barely go to the supermarket these days. Like red and spicy peppers, mini and big tomatoes and some egg plants. Zucchini I can harvest in my neighbors garden, it is so nice working and sharing together in this way. Where I work and share together, that makes gardening double fun! Also we preserving our foods, work together and share our jars.

We have many pumpkins this year, good to have them all, they are easy to keep the whole winter time. Pumpkins are great for many reasons, not only because of their nutrients but also because of the different foods you can make out of it. You can make sweet and sour in jars, marmalade wit orange, put it in my sourdough bread, cake with orange cinnamon and hazelnuts, humus and of course many types of soups. Next time in another blog I will talk about all these recipes!

Yesterday I harvest my almond from my tree. This year I have more than last year. The tree is growing and every year I can harvest more of them.
together with walnuts this is my favorite nut. Look how wonderful they grow, protected in 3 layers of skin. A Fluffy’/soft skin and 2 wooden layers.

The fluffy skin I take off, the wooden skin I leave on it until I will use the. But first I let them to dry.

On my friends field there are many hazelnuts, too many for her to eat, so I am again lucky to be able to harvest them as well.

Soon the time of harvesting walnuts and chestnuts will start and the forest in Greece is full with these trees.

In this way I can survive the winter easy without needing to much from the supermarkets.

In September in Greece we are still able to plant seeds and small plants for the winter months.
So the last week and these days I have planted more Broccoli, cabbages, Cauliflowers, leeks. Also I have planted seeds for spinach, arugula, different kinds of salads, herbs, dark leavy greens (like kale), carrots.

So still a lot of work in and around BabetterPlace, we could use some extra hands to help and some extra hungry mouths to feed… hihi.

The sea is still wonderful to swim in, the beaches are getting private again! So September is I think the best month of the year for me!

Have a lovely day.
