While planning my spring and summer garden I want to prioritize beauty. I am planting flowers as far as the eye can see. The good news is that flowers have planted themselves in the case of these zinnias and bella de noche plants.
The bad news is that a certain creature who also inhabits the yard might try to eat some of them.
So, what am I to do? Hide the flowers where they are out of sight of the mare and also out of my sight too? Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of a flower garden?
((a photo from last years flower garden which was tucked away behind a fence and hedge row - very beautiful but, pretty much hidden from view))
Well, in a way yes in a way no. I have certainly noticed that a home surrounded by flowers promotes my own mental health. But, what really got me into growing flowers was to provide pollen and nectar for the local pollinators.
I asked around -- Will the mare eat the sunflower plants before they even get a chance to bloom? Is it worth taking the risk? Or is it best to plant the sunflowers in the fenced off garden where their safety is secured but their beauty not so visible?
The obvious answer is to do a little bit of both, or rather, do it all! This morning I planted a few of the sunflowers in a flower bed in the front yard, transplanted others into bigger pots, and also directly sowed some seeds into the garden.
These particular sunflowers were handed down to me from a friend who once had a thriving flower farm. I feel like it is my responsibility to keep the tradition of growing them going. And thus, cannot risk them all being eaten however much I would love to chance to see those happy sunflowers from my front patio.
I would love to plant sunflowers but I failed to seedling them 🥲
your garden really full of cherish!
I wonder if you can still plant them? it might be worth a try and plant a few seeds directly in the garden around your other veggies.
You have a lot of beautiful flowers in your garden. I am also planning to grow sunflowers that too with a seed for the first time, hope it grows well. Nice Photography!
I am glad you liked the images!! I always take quite a while to take them, I want people who read this blog to feel like they are experiencing the garden too. I wish you luck with your sunflowers!!
I always feel like I am there with those plants, it's like a virtual tour of your garden. :) Thanks for your wishes!
@calendulacraft The garden is beautiful. Because the garden is more beautiful because of the sunflowers. I like the butterflies in the flowers.
I find those flowers very beautiful! Besides that it is very nice the benefits they bring both for you (feeling better mentally), and for the environment (pollination, I had never seen from that point of view).
I love flowers, I hope one day to have such a big and beautiful garden! I hope your flowers will grow nice and well every time ❤️✨
I love sunflowers, but I have failed to plant them haha my purpose was the same, besides loving that flower, bring pollinators, but there were no horses that could eat it, but pests that I did not know how to fight, I hope you have grown it and do not eat them 🙏
I really don't know if the mare might like sunflowers, but it will be worth a try. With such beautiful flowers in your garden your mental health will be in full bloom. 👏🏻👏🏻
