HERBS, FLOWERS, VEGGIES AND BUTTERFLIES. #hivegardenjournal JULY 2023

in HiveGarden10 months ago

It's hard to believe another month has gone by since my last #gardenjournal.

The farm is exploding with color, from the herbs like dill, oregano and thyme to my rose garden then back around to all the veggies that are getting flowers and preparing to bear fruit.

An added bonus this month was a burst of monarch butterflies. They seem to be everywhere, which is wonderful since they are excellent pollinators.

The monarch butterfly or simply monarch (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae) in the family Nymphalidae.[5] Other common names, depending on region, include milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black-veined brown.[6] It is amongst the most familiar of North American butterflies and an iconic pollinator,[7]

These lovely gentle insects always bring a smile to my face.

The cilantro has finally started to take off, I enjoy that herb with some line juice on a garden salad or in a cold pasta salad, so good. The thyme is still tiny, but I have no doubt it will fill the entire pot by next month. Let's hope I am not proven wrong.

I have already started to make use of the sweet basil, it adds such flavor to fresh mozzarella and tomatoes, I add a drizzle of this just before I serve. It's a family favorite.

The rosemary contributed to last evening's meal, grilled salmon with home fries sprinkled generously with this wonderful healthy herb.

The annuals are starting to take root and I am hopeful that the weather cooperates, it's been hot and dry one week and wet and soggy the next, top it off with some smog from the wildfires in Canada blocking the sun I am a little worried we may not have such a great year for the flowers.

Now throw in a few hungry deer and there goes my sunflowers. But I took care of that problem with the milk and egg mixer I sprayed on them, so that should keep them away.

Next up, features lettuce and peas. Both of these veggies are doing exceptionally well.

We have been munching on some of the young lettuce leaves for a week or more now. As you can see we have quite a crop this year.

The peas are climbing the string lattice, popping out flowers, and getting ready to be harvested, soon I hope, they are nature's candy and the grandkids love them as much as I do.

For the grand finale I want to boast about the butterflies. They are so colorful and gentle, as I sat and watched them dance around the flowers I was amazed at how close they kept coming to me. One actually landed on my leg for a moment as if to say "Hello, isn't it a lovely day?". I thought that was so cool, I have been thinking of putting on some sweet perfume and just sitting still out near the gardens to see if I could get one to sit awhile with me.

Nature is truly amazing, we are blessed here on our #homestead to be surrounded by all of its beauty.

So, there you have it folks, July 2023 #gardenjournal update from the mountains in Upstate New York, USA. IT'S GREAT TO BE ALIVE!!!!

Sort:

It’s like you just planted your roses recently and now there are so many flowers 😍. Your vegetables are very healthy too 😋. I assume that your soil must be very fertile.. congratulations on the great harvest @farm-mom.

Good morning @luckylaica hope the day is good to you.

So nice to hear from others that really appreciate what the good earth can give us. I have a passion for growing things. Herbs, flowers, veggies, trees, you name it and I will grow it. I am at peace while I am digging in the dirt. untitled.gif

All is well @farm-mom,thank you and no worries every garden related thing I truly appreciate the most. I also have the passion for planting but unfortunately as of this moment everything change since I have to move to the City for my job therefore my gardening in the province is not good enough for our needs. 🥰

It is great to be alive and thriving! Hi, @farm-mom !! Good morning and I am late for the party! Your garden looks wonderful, I sure do love looking through the garden posts, admiring how much love and effort goes into these plots. How many different lettuces do you grow? Long ago, I grew the staples of a summer garden, but never more than basil, parsley, and rosemary. I can't figure out why as I bought them and dried them... but, walking out to your garden and snipping it fresh? So very satisfying!

It's a wonder anyone's garden on the East Coast is growing. It has been one of the craziest Springs in my life. Our rain has mostly been deluged at night, then like everyone else here, overcast or smoky during the day. Ours is not as bad, but, enough hazardous days to last me a lifetime.

But, the monarchs! They are lovely and to have them popping from flower to flower, doing their job, and being able to enjoy their beautiful selves? Win-win! How do you keep those hands so pretty? I'd show you mine, but, I don't want to scare you.

Your flowers are gorgeous, I thank you! nature is truly amazing! Those sunflowers are making their way! I have never heard of that remedy for deer, milk, and eggs. That might make me run towards them. Just saying. You will have to let me know how that does.

Good morning from here! Mary, Mary - boy does your garden grow! Have a fabulous Thursday!

Good morning Denise, sorry I didn't get back sooner but I have grandkids with us for a long weekend, their parents are off to a wedding and some much-needed time together. Oh, how I remember those times when my mom would take my crew for a weekend, heavenly.

The gardens are shaping up pretty well, the weather has been crazy, extreme heat then downpours, beating things up pretty well, but so far, they have bounced back.

Fresh herbs, what can I say, I use them fresh all summer long then freeze the rest, make pesto, add chives to mashed potatoes then freeze, the dill is awesome on fish plus we make dill pickles that are soo so good.

Hope you continue to enjoy the summer, we are headed to the Jersey Shore Wednesday, rented a nice big house with room for the crew. Getting excited about visiting, grew up loving the "shore". I am a Jersey girl at heart. We don't pump gas hehehe.

Have a lovely day @dswigle #alwaysaflower 😁

Everything is looking so vibrant! I never get tired of seeing or watching butterflies. Not only knowing how good they are for the environment, but just for the joy of it!

That lettuce is picture-perfect! I would nibble on leaves every time I walked by that bed. Love to see all the yummy herbs thriving, too. We finally have some good basil and a hearty rosemary bush to add to our usual mint, lemon balm and oregano. Though I need to start some more dill because some fuzzy bugger dug ours up and killed it. Grr, especially since cucumbers are coming soon!

Oh yes, get the dill going. We just planted our second crop of it because we know the cukes are coming in soon.

Thanks for stopping by, it's always nice to hear from you.
You are one busy bee. With summer here and the kids out of school the family has been here a lot. Lots of corn hole and swimming. So much fun!

Be well my friend.

It is great to be alive! How I love knowing others who think so. Many of us seemed so stressed out.

Love the butterflies as much as you do, although I don't have as many.

Your garden is beautiful.

Our gardens are doing pretty well here, although the deer enjoyed a few of my sunflowers, otherwise the pests have been staying away.

Glad you stopped by, always nice to hear from you.

Hi. I liked your large garden. It looks beautiful, more with the monarch butterflies. Happy day @farm-mom from Venezuela 🌻🌼.

Hello again, yes, the butterflies add beauty to the already beautiful flowers. Nice to hear from you.

How good it is to harvest vegetables at home, they are always very fresh. I loved the flowers in your garden and the butterflies. Beautiful @farm-mom

Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed my little post. I really enjoy growing flowers and seeing the butterflies on them is an added bonus.
Have a great day.

An explosion of color and flavor you have in your garden. What a joy! I love butterflies, how fortunate that you have so many of them visiting this year and that one was even kind enough to come and say hello to you, hehe. 🦋💕

Hello, hello @coquicoin good morning.

Thanks for giving me a read, I love how you get my passion for gardening and appreciation of nature. The butterflies here this year are amazing, they are everywhere, so beautiful.

Have a peaceful and happy day.

Thank you @farm-mom for a most interesting post, you've motivated me to get into my garden again, something i've been neglecting of late.
Beautiful post.
Have a great day.

Good morning my friend @artywink, thanks for your kind words.
I have a passion for gardening, digging in the dirt gives me peace of mind. It also makes me more conscious of how fortunate I am to live in a place with such an abundance of good soil. So many places around the world don't have this luxury.

Glad you enjoyed my post, have a peaceful and relaxing day.

Thanks so much for your effort! My pleasure 😁

A woman after my own heart! I forgot you are also such a lover of herbs. Despite my lack of green fingers in all (um-most) things gardening. I must have my herbs. I love them. And yours are beautiful. Especially to jazz up grilled salmon! YUM

Nothing better than fresh herbs on just about anything I cook whether it's baked, air-fried, or grilled, always so yummy.

Hope you are happy and well my friend. Always nice to hear from you, thanks for stopping by.

Garden looks healthy with the mix you have, will keep you going for sometime.

Butterflies always welcome, dancing across from flower to flower making dizzy lizzy enjoy gardening even more.

Hi Joan, hope all is well with you. This summer has had some crazy weather, we go from burning heat to heavy rain but the gardens are doing ok. My annual flowers are not doing well at all this year, but those butterflies always make me smile.

It's all doing so well! It's been raining more often than not here, so not seeing much besides rain flattened flowers atm.

So love seeing your roses.

The roses are beautiful, but the annuals are doing lousy this year, too much rain here. We are going to the Jersey shore on Wednesday but the long forecast is looking wet there also, but you never know, I just like being at the ocean with family.

Hope you are well and happy my busy friend. Take care.
