Planting raspberry dreams in our new garden [EN/FR]

Hello the gardeners! This weekend had to be a freelance work weekend, but I had cruelly desire to continue the preparation of the vegetable garden. Time goes on and I know that I have still many things to do.

So I dropped my computer to go put the hands in the grass.

Last weekend, before we left again from our parents’ house, my mother took a raspberry plant from her garden so that we could plant it. If it makes fruits, it won’t be enough for several desserts, but it’s a very good beginning and with @altheana, we were delighted.

She also took a smaller plant that was beginning to grow right in the middle of her vegetable garden. That’s when she told us that the raspberry bush was quite invasive and had the tendency to spread year after year. For us, it’s perfect because in time it will allow us to have more raspberries!

On her side, my mother-in-law offered us ready-to-use thyme that we will only have to plant at the edge of our vegetable squares. I love thyme and I can’t wait to eat some in all the sauces!

Due to our a bit busy schedule, last week we didn’t have the time to plant all this in the garden. It didn’t rain all week and the raspberry bush was starting to dry a bit in its pot, under full sun. The thyme, itself, was doing pretty well. According to my mother-in-law, it’s a plant that supports drought quite well, it’s very robust.

On Friday evening, the owner of our house came to maintain his gardens and to say hello and see if we had settled in well. While showing him our vegetable garden, I asked him the question to know where to put the raspberry bush.

He answered me that the raspberry bush likes to be against the walls, but not stuck either. Also, not necessarily under full sun. That’s perfect because just next to my vegetable gardens, there is an old kennel. So, all the morning I will have sun. Then, around 2 or 3 PM, shade. I really want to try here. On the left on the photo then.

I didn’t have a shovel to make a hole, but in the barn that is in the other garden of the property, I found a hoe. And it was just as good.

In less than 10 minutes, my first raspberry plant was in place.

I repeated the same actions for the second plant. As you can see, this one is much smaller and really suffered from the lack of water.

Now, there are two plants in the garden. I can’t wait to be in summer to see if the first will give some fruits. At least one to tell myself that it likes it here. I made sure to space the other by about 50 cm to avoid root competition.

Then, I thought about the best spot for the thyme. I didn’t have too much idea. There are people who manage, in one glance, to optimize their garden at best. On my side, I try not to look on Internet and rather to listen to my heart. It is important to gather information, but on Internet you find everything and its opposite.

So I installed it at one of the ends of my vegetable garden. At the top left of the previous photo, you can see the delimitation of a vegetable square. It is here that I chose to plant it. In the morning, due to the hedge behind it, it won’t have too much light. On the other hand, it will have the hot sun of the full day. I think it will like it here.

To protect the soil, I placed a small mulch based on leaves. Thyme doesn’t like humidity, so I made sure not to put leaves stuck to it. But just around to avoid that weeds grow again.

It is much bigger than what I already have since it will be 20 m². So I will have a total of 30 m² of vegetable garden. Here, I plan to mainly put potatoes.

Bonjour les jardiniers ! Ce week-end devait être un week-end de travail freelance, mais j'avais cruellement envie de continuer la préparation du potager. Le temps avance et je sais qu'il me reste de nombreuses choses à faire.

J'ai donc lâché mon ordinateur pour aller mettre les mains dans l'herbe.

Le week-end dernier, avant que nous repartions de chez nos parents, ma mère a prélevé un pied de framboisier de son jardin afin que nous puissions le planter. S'il fait des fruits, ça ne sera pas suffisant pour plusieurs desserts, mais c'est un très bon début et avec @altheana, nous étions ravis.

Elle nous a aussi prélevé un plus petit pied qui commençait à pousser en plein milieu de son potager. C'est là qu'elle nous a dit que le framboisier était assez invasif et avait tendance à s'étaler d'année en année. Pour nous, c'est parfait car dans le temps ça nous permettra d'avoir plus de framboises !

De son côté, ma belle-mère nous a offert du thym tout prêt qu'il ne nous restera plus qu'à planter au bord de nos carrés potagers. J'adore le thym et j'ai hâte d'en manger à toutes les sauces !

Du fait de notre emploi du temps un peu chargé, la semaine dernière nous n'avons pas eu le temps de planter tout ça dans le jardin. Il n'a pas plu de la semaine et le framboisier commençait un peu à dessécher dans son pot, en plein soleil. Le thym, lui, se portait assez bien. D'après ma belle-mère, c'est une plante qui supporte assez bien la sécheresse, c'est très robuste.

Le vendredi soir, le propriétaire de notre logement est venu pour entretenir ses jardins et pour nous passer le bonjour et voir si nous nous étions bien installés. En lui montrant notre potager, je lui ai posé la question de savoir où mettre le framboisier.

Il m'a répondu que le framboisier aime être contre les murs, mais pas collé non plus. Aussi, pas forcément en plein soleil. C'est parfait car juste à côté de mes potagers, il y a un ancien chenil. Ainsi, tout le matin j'aurai du soleil. Puis, aux alentours de 14h - 15h, de l'ombre. J'ai bien envie d'essayer ici. À gauche sur la photo donc.

Je n'avais pas de pelle pour faire un trou, mais dans la grange qui se trouve dans l'autre jardin de la propriété, j'ai trouvé une houe. Et c'était tout aussi bien.

En moins de 10 minutes, mon premier pied de framboisier était en place.

J'ai répété les mêmes actions pour le second pied. Comme vous pouvez le voir, celui-ci est beaucoup plus petit et a vraiment souffert du manque d'eau.

À présent, il y a deux pieds dans le jardin. J'ai hâte d'être en été pour voir si le premier donnera quelques fruits. Au moins un afin de me dire qu'il se plaît bien ici. Je me suis assuré d'espacer l'autre d'environ 50 cm afin d'éviter les concurrences racinaires.

Ensuite, j'ai réfléchi au meilleur emplacement pour le thym. Je n'avais pas trop d'idée. Il y a des personnes qui arrivent, en un coup d'œil, à optimiser au mieux leur jardin. De mon côté, j'essaie de ne pas regarder sur Internet et plutôt d'écouter mon cœur. Il est important de glaner des informations, mais sur Internet on trouve de tout et son contraire.

Je l'ai donc installé à l'une des extrémités de mon potager. En haut à gauche de la photo précédente, vous pouvez voir la délimitation d'un carré potager. C'est ici que j'ai choisi de le planter. Le matin, du fait de la haie derrière lui, il n'aura pas trop de lumière. En revanche, il aura le soleil chaud de la pleine journée. Je pense qu'il se plaira bien ici.

Pour protéger le sol, j'ai placé un petit paillage à base de feuilles. Le thym n'aime pas l'humidité, j'ai donc fait en sorte de ne pas mettre de feuilles collées à ce dernier. Mais juste autour afin d'éviter que les mauvaises herbes ne repoussent.

Il est beaucoup plus grand que ce que j'ai déjà puisqu'il fera 20 m². J'aurai donc un total de 30 m² de potager. Ici, je prévois d'y mettre principalement des pommes de terre.
