I’m going to start the tour with the Big garden. It had mesclun and kale left in it last fall, as they were doing well. They did well into January, when the deer got in and stripped them.
This kale survived the deer and is holding its own.
The big quince in the north end of the gardens has flowerbuds.
The rhubarb has poked through, also on the north end.
The garlic was planted down the east side. It’s up much higher and more are up on the north end.
The south end is shaded some by the neighbor’s trees, so it would be slower.
The new Little Trees are also shaded by the neighbor’s trees and only the peach was showing signs of life.
In the New Herb garden, this is what’s growing now:
Row 1, wormwood
Row 6, chives
Row 6, hyssop
The hyssop had a lot of winter kill but there are lots of new leaves on the lower stems.
Row 6, thyme
I lost about half the thyme over the winter. But that’s better than most winters. I lose it all then.
Row 7, chamomile
Chamomile is an annual here, but this survived the winter just fine.
Row 7, lupine
I had 2 lupines here and lost one. But this one is doing fine.
New South, chiondoxa luciliae ‘Violet Beauty’
Wildflower area, snowdrops
West garden, coltsfoot
New North garden, hellebore flowers
When I looked a week or so ago, there was just a hint of buds. Now there are flowers.
Old North garden
I seldom see bulbs up this far at this time of year in this north facing garden.
East Shed garden, lots of daffodils and snow crocus at the top
This little garden at the north end of the East Shed garden held flowers from my son’s garden when he was little. The daffodils are doing really well here.
So that’s the status of the gardens in the yard in the middle of March this year.
It's wonderful to know that some of those plants survived the cold and harsh Winter and are coming out beautifully. Talk about resilience 😊
Oh you have a bigger garden? That's great and it's going to look very colourful soon with all these plants that made it through the snowy Winter.
The Big garden is one of the vegetable gardens. Outside of the things I posted, nothing else is in there. That's where I will plant many of the seedlings I am starting this spring.
So much space! You’ll have lots of planting ahead of you! The weather seems much warmer and spring is in the air.
Yes, it's been a very odd winter this year, much warmer than usual and not much snow.
You must have so many things you wish to plant. The garden looks big
I like that!
It's nice to see some life in the garden again, isn't it! I was walking around the outside of our property the other day and noticed lots of things starting to take life again. So exciting.
Your plants are all coming up nicely so far. It does seem like they are early this year. I bet it is due to the ground not having a real deep freeze and warmer temps during the day.
