“In March the earth remembers its own name. Everywhere the plates of snow are cracking. The rivers begin to sing. In the sky the winter stars are sliding away; new stars appear as, later, small blades of grain will shine in the dark fields.
And the name of every place is joyful.”
- Mary Oliver
On Friday my helper friend was still sick. I finished the laundry, got some dishes into the dishwasher, and sat down and worked on estate stuff.
At 12:30PM I got ready to go to an event at the Senior Center but the van never arrived. I called and I got lucky and a van was nearby and picked me up. Apparently when I called in the 3 events I wanted to attend, they never got written in. So I had them do it while I was on the phone, so hopefully the next 2 events will be uneventful.
Once home I sat and watched the last season of Gilmore Girls. Then I started the 4 episodes made 10 years later. I had to get both fires going well, as it was to be mid 30’sF at night and not very sunny on Saturday.
On Saturday morning I didn’t get up until nearly 7AM. I got the shades up and spent an hour tending seedlings. The mesclun needed higher lights, so I moved it to the top shelf on the porch.
The storage onions are 7” high now and needed a higher light, so they got moved to the bottom shelf in the dining room. The Walla onions were up, so I transplanted a lot and thinned them and took the cover off. The only thing not up is the celery.
Kale, left, and phacelia, right, on the porch
Once these were done, I cleaned up the kitchen and went in and worked on the estate stuff for 2 hours. Then I got ready and went out to the gardens. I had to make my notes on the South Herb garden before I could get started.
I was tackling the New East garden, one of the bigger of the gardens.
It wasn’t very bad and I had it done in 1½ hours. But the wind came up shortly after I got started and weeding or raking in the wind is a waste of time.
I got done as fast as I could, skipping the iris. I’ll have to go back to it next time I go out. I got the BulbTone and FllowerTone down and got my photos and made my notes. Then I got cleaned up and got inside out of the wind.
I had the energy and time to do another East garden, but it was a waste of time in the wind.
New East garden – mock orange
I got some lunch and finished watching the last of the Gilmore Girls. I sat and edited all the photos I had taken and got my post written in the evening. It’s to be cold again, mid 20’sF, during the night and very windy, so we will need both stoves going well.
Sunday is to be cold, in the mid 40’sF but sunny. Then it snows then rains all day on Monday. Winter is back…sigh…
The garden is looking very neat, and the growth of the plants are quite encouraging.
The gardens are looking so tidy and more cold on the way. I had flurries yesterday but nothing could last with the ground warmed up. lol.
Orange? Can it survive to the cold and snow?

This means you had a great sleep on Saturday
That’s good to know
The garden looks well arranged and nice
Looks good!
You are doing a very great job my dear friend
It’s “mock” orange because the flowers smell like orange blossoms. It is not citrus or fruit.
