Finding Alternative Spaces For Planting My Crops

in HiveGarden21 days ago (edited)

Hello community people, hope your gardening activities are going well. As we are having more rains here the crops are doing just great. Some farmers who planted early are already harvesting their crops especially corn, okra and pumpkin leaves, yes fresh corns are in the market now.

These vegetables are from my sister in-law's garden. She's so excited that she can now get fresh vegetables from her garden, no more buying them from the market.

The corn has flowered and will start producing fruits soon. You see, that's one of the benefits of owning a garden.

Remember in my previous gardening post, I talked about having a small portion in my compound where I usually cultivate. So it happened that early this year, the landlord came and built a three self-contain rooms there and that left me with no place to cultivate. I was so unhappy and wished that he didn't develop the place because I had lots of crops that I had wanted to try out this time around, but you know it's his own to do as he wishes.

I tried getting another place around my neighborhood for lease but there was none. Seems like everyone was farming this year, lol. It's really a good thing that more people are going into farming, if not for anything for their own consumption.

Since leaving the crops will amount to waste, I decided to make use of the little space where the septic tank was built and planted pumpkin, and corn there.

You can see that some have germinated. Soon they will be needing some manure and ash.

The little space left after planting the vegetables, I used it plant cassava stems, and one yam head, hoping that they will grow.

I still had some crops left to plant but the space was filled so I switched to Plan B, which is using bags. I had already gotten some cement bags washed and kept handy.

So I went to a nearby farmland that had good soil and filled the bags, five in number.

Filling the bags with soil

I missed the soil with some compost I've been preparing from waste materials since. You know the crops need manure for healthy growth.

Carrying those bags of soil wasn't an easy task but I had to because I needed them to plant my crops, lol.

I laid them beside the wall at my backyard where they can have access to sunlight and rain. These are very important elements that crops need to grow well.

After that I proceeded to plant the remaining pumpkin seeds (ugu vegetable), including fluted pumpkin seeds (ugboru vegetable).

Here's curry leaf that I bought, after removing the leaves, I planted the stems too. This is another way to plant curry aside from the seeds, and it usually survives. I hope this one will.

Another thing I'll plant is spinach. The one that grew at the garden were destroyed due to the ongoing house construction. Luckily I saved the seeds from the previous season so I'll need to get more bags of soil for planting them.
Till then let me watch these ones already planted hoping they will germinate.

You can see how I've been able to maximize the alternative spaces available to plant my crops. I had to do it to ensure that there's availability of vegetables and other food crops at my disposal. Again with this I know that I'll be eating fresh food crops from a safe source, That's being Intentional with what I eat and I hope you will too.
I guess this is me, putting my minimalistic tendencies into practice and I'm so loving it.

Thank you for reading and please me goodluck with my plants 😂

Wonderful, @luchyl - I think you have done an amazing job here! Did you know that you can maximise your cropping by creating a vertical farm? You can grow plants in vertical arrays using hydroponics. people have done it using used 2 litre soda bottles to create a hydroponics set up!! It's simple and genius. Google it for home gardeners. !LUV !PIMP

I've heard of hydroponics even watched videos about it but too lazy to even think of trying it, lol. But with you mentioning it now, I'll look into it. Thanks for popping that into my head, hehehe.
I appreciate your wonderful contribution.

All I can say after reading this post is that all your effort will not waste.

You can go through this stress of planting and it won't grow.

Keep it up o
Hivians are proud of you.

I appreciate kind wish and commendation, thank you..

This is very very impressive, I love that you are putting in a good amount of effort in it. You see that plan B of yours? Very smart! My dad also just planted some pumpkin seeds using that technique today and I can't wait to see the outcome in a few weeks.

Oh, that's wonderful. The pumpkin seeds will grow well, I tell you..
I appreciate your kind words.! BBH

You are welcome sis, I will look forward to it, thank youuu.

Traditional gardening is still very strong in some countries, but the sooner people understand that there are different ways to continue doing it, the more this activity will be spread around.

You're right but you know traditional gardening will still be practiced no matter how technological advancement we have.
Thank you for coming around.

This is a good job you have done even with minimal space.

I wish I was living close to you so that I can breeze in and out with some corn and pumpkin leaves 😁

My dear, I had to practice the act of minimalism to the fullest oo else I won't have any vegetables to enjoy.
Don't worry you'll get a place to plant yours in the nearest future.

Wow, you are such a an intentional farmer
Really interesting how you are maximizing this alternative space. Please keep us updated on the progress..

needing some manure and ash.

So your pumpkin leaves will need ash? For what exactly, let me learn

#dreemerforlife

Ash helps prevent pests and animals from eating the plants. It also add some nutrients like carbon, potassium and lime. Infact it is a type of organic manure.

I appreciate your kind words.
