Hey ho green thumbs!
I was so busy reading the other gardening posts on HIVE that I forgot that it's probably a good idea to write about what's haps in my garden too! Like this amazing banksia...
I'll try to keep it short - when you have five acres, you can have too much to write about and I get a little paralysed! We've done an awful lot of grass removal - not lawn grass, but native grasses we'd intentionally planted - because the rabbits have been insane this year and are digging burrows everywhere. We've also cut down some trees limbs and trees to open up the view a little. A lot of the Autumn clean up is nearly done - the pumpkin vine has been layered into the compost heap, the garlic is planted, and everything is pruned and tidied up to wait out the winter.
The most interesting thing in my garden this year is the choko, which I've never grown nor even eaten before! The vine has gone crazy and it's sooo pretty. It seems to have spent a lot of time twisting and winding it's way over wires and posts, but the fruit is only just appearing (or is it a vegetable?). I'm not even sure when the optimum fruiting time is, but as the temperatures drop this week, I don't actually know what'll happen to the vine. I suppose I could google it, right?
Some other notables:
- Lots of elecampane root, harvested and put in a lung supportive fire tonic with mullein and rosehips
- Mullein flowers are now infusing in oil for earaches
- Tons of jalapeno - might pickle some!
- Trying to keep my chooks out of the veggie patch - they are after the silverbeet, which I grow specifically for them. They need to learn patience!
- Broad beans are doing their thang.
- Earwigs are being assholes. Every time I plant broccoli it gets snipped off at the socks.
- Beetroot seedlings are in, as are swedes.
- Calendula is starting to flower everywhere
I'm looking forward to this winter as I won't be working as much, and will have time to prepare the garden and do a lot of things I wanted to landscape wise to be ready for Spring.

I love the look of that grevillea as much as it's name ( that includes the word 'evil' muhahaha! )
What a lovely garden you have! P.S. I have Dutch neighbors with 2 kids and 7 hectares of land! I wonder if they knew what they were getting themselves into, when they bought their land, a year ago. Just the maintenance alone would drive me nuts.

At least with 7 hectares You can mainly let it be wild .. must be amazing!! How groovy is the grevillea .. lol, never noticed it had evil in it, trust you to notice ππ€ͺ

do your chickens like the silverbeat that much... lol... i can't wait till we get ours in a few weeks.
I'm currently waiting for my #gardenjournal post to jolly load. I loaded it on 3speak (its a video post) and i forgot to push save. So i have to wait another WHOLE hour or so for it to load. Maybe its ME that needs the patience.
We will be planting som broadbeans too. Will try some broccoli... but not sure how we will go in our limited space until the garden is up and running properly.

yeah i'm thinking about that possibility for sure. But need to get cracking... lol.. Its tipping it down today. I said in the video we were expecting flooding rain... it was pretty heavy overnight. Im about to go outside and check how much the rain has cleaned the stones for me :-)
Anyway at least video is up. I will do a Text version with photos today though as i know many people don't like the videos as you can't just "skip" through them.
I hope i get a bit done today. see how we go.

Is your choko the same as my people's chayote? Or as they call it in the Philippines, sayote.
I think so, as far as I know! It certainly has a few names!

That banksia is really amazing! I envy your Choko, mine is struggling because it is really hot right now in our country.
My calendula is still inside under lights and will be for another week or so. Things can start going out in mid May to the cold frame.
Wow, that would be a lot of weeding with that huge land. The choko is called chayote in the Philippines. It is a vegetable my mom cooked in her dishes. Here is the info you might want to read...

I'm impressed by how this thing spreads fast! Mom threw some seeds in a random spot at her home and now it's gigantic.
