Turmeric and Tunes

in HiveGardenyesterday

I really wanted to join in the Hive Garden QOTW with the sounds of my garden, or at least three garden related toons for a #threetunetuesday #hivegarden double whammy. But after a big long surf session yesterday and a headache today, I'm not feeling motivated. But there is a song that's been in my head all week, and perhaps it's enough to share it in this post.

This morning was the first frost - crisp and cut through with sunshine. I spent the morning at the beach watching the waves whilst the garden warmed up enough to warrant my attention. The basil, eggplant and peppers that had been holding on way longer than they should needed to be pulled out, as with the purple beans. Everything in cycles.

The turmeric harvest was decent - it's not common to grow it this far south but in a big black plastic tub full of compost in a sheltered sun trap in my garden and I ended up with a good haul.

The song in my head and on my stereo really fucking loud is this one by Fred Again Melbourne artist Angie Macmahon. It's gone straight to my funeral playlist. Her voice is beautiful - it's rhythmic, tranquil, majestic and soul pumping. Like the garden in its seasonal cycles, so is everything in flow and flux, exactly as it meant to be. Do yourself a favor and listen to this one really loud.

The refrain is atmospheric, beautiful - I think of the sun rising and setting all year in the garden, the winter cold and the summer hot.

Life, death, life again, sky, ground, sky
Day, night, day again, rise, fall, rise
Life, death, life again, sky, ground, sky
Light, dark, light again, light, dark, light again

And there's also a poignancy in the last verse that takes my breath away, particularly a reminder that things happen the way they are meant to - time is supposed to run out, things, and people, are mean to die. You get sad and things get light again.

Time is supposed to run out, time is supposed to
Sun is supposed to go down, sun is supposed to
Like your mood, like your power, like your battery

To make this a #threetunetursday I better share two more of hers - I've only just discovered her so here's her doing a cover of Neil Young's Helpless, one of my fave tunes of all time.

And to a more banging song by her which was the first song I heard of hers, on the way to work last week. It's got a really Melbourne guitar sound to it. Enjoy!

I'm going to put her loud on the stereo so her music drifts across my garden this afternoon. Happy days.

With Love,

I didn't! The frost came this morning and wilted the leaves so I harvested it.
