In the case of asparagus, the first harvest is in the 3rd year. Although the spears are still quite thin then, they should definitely be harvested. Do not let them spike into the flower! Because then the roots will no longer produce new ones. It makes sense to cover the soil with wood shavings. But you must make sure that the soil does not become too acidic. Brussels sprouts in May? The slugs and cabbage flies will still have a lot of fun with the plant until the first frost. 😉 I always wait until July/August to plant winter vegetables.
