Entry#106: Street Food Safari ___"Filipino Street Food"!

Hello hivers! Our theme for this week is quite exciting because it's all about street foods. With the blazing sun nowadays, we tend to prefer the late afternoon stroll with our pets along the park while munching our favorite afternoon snacks or to the coffee shop over a cup of freshly brewed coffee or the native cacao blend! Hmmm, you may wonder why coffee lovers still prefer the hot coffee despite the heat? Lol! Well, I for one, am one of them so hear me out:) It's because it gives you the adrenaline and getting energized once again despite the heat. It blends with your body chemistry that it gives me total headache without one! I guess coffee drinkers can relate to this.

Hence, there are coffee stalls beside the street with various food delights to pair with coffee such as sweetened glutinous food products namely, summan, Biko, budbud, puto maya, bitsukoy and salvaro (homemade break with young coconut added).As you can see, they're still using the traditional coffee strainer made of pure cotton flour sack fabric. It's because the effect is different when you use the modern coffee mixers. The men prefer strong coffee without sugar over a stick of cigarette.lol! Coffee stalls are usually located beside the street pavement for easy access wherein office personnel drop by every snack time for a quick break.

This is what we call Ibus. It's made of sweetened glutinous rice wrapped around with coconut leaf. Some wrap it with banana leaf in a triangular shape too.

These are variety food snacks (puto cheese, puto kutsinta, cassava cake, etc) prepared by my sister-in-law. Her clients send their orders online which will be displayed at the market stalls or for their snacks.

Sunday is market day in our locality. People usually drop the coffee shop after church mass.

After our Sunday service, we're looking forward to have a fresh buko treat (young coconut). The store at the back is closed during Sundays so coconut peddlers were allowed to put-up their stalls. It has become a habit for passers-by especially the motorcyclists,to drop by and take a sip of this nutritious buko juice. Then we proceed to the coffee shop. It serves as our breakfast already.:)

I prefer puto dahon (rice cake in banana leaf) or the kutsinta since they're not sweet. My helper also prepare this kind of food every Sunday as they have 'free' supplies of coconuts at home, and sell it in the neighborhood then deliver some at the eateries. She used to bring fresh buko juice for me everyday as well. Of course, I see to it that she's well compensated for her efforts as well.

Banana-Q and camote cues (sweet potatoes)are favorite snacks too, either in the morning around 10AM and 3PM in the afternoon

The nutritious Tahu is usually served hot especially in the morning. It is made of coagulated soya beans added with syrup and sago. My kids love this since they were young.:) I guess it's everybody's favorite of the young and old. Would you believe guys, this man is the same man who used to drop by my eldest son's house to deliver his delicious tahu for my little grandson. He used to carry two containers of Tahu on both ends using a bamboo stick like a yoke for balancing. Now, he's levelled up to using his own motorcycle with his son as his assistant whenever there's no school classes. Now, my grandson is already taller than him and still enjoy eating his favorite tahu.

When the sun begins to sit on the horizon and the wind cooling down, people go out to enjoy the beauty of his/her surrounding by strolling along the park or just sit and chat with each other while munching on their favorite timpura, siomai or tokoyaki sprinkled with hot chili or sweet sauce or lumpia Shanghai dipped with gravy.

Big Mac is another rolling store on standby in accessible corners like the parking lots and gasoline stations where travelers can drop by to quench their thirst and enjoy the buy-1-take-1 burgers promo or the yummy siopao.:)

Two weeks ago on a Friday evening after our evening vesper, we passed by the festive preparation of the local government where various fun rides were installed. There were different food attractions such as that potato barbeque on the above pho-to, fruit shakes and the hanging cotton candies!

We bought some goodies and opted to bring it home since we had family friends who dropped by after watching some events. Chicken Inasal (grilled chicken) is a favorite street food everywhere including siomai at the far end and "batchoy" in cups though we ordered 10 servings of it to bring home.

On my way home, I passed by this busy place filled with people eating their favorite street foods with gusto. Street foods like *chicken/Pork Inasal (grilled chicken/Pork) and other seafoods are best served especially during night time where people in all walks of like relax and eat after a whole day's work.

Street Foods are easy to access instead of going in restaura.nts where you have to for your orders. They're cheaper and affordable hence the younger generation enjoy eating with gusto. There's a bad connotation when others say street foods are dirty! Of course it's not. All you need to do is avoid the foods that isn't good for your health especially the fatty food if you have hypertension or allergies. It's not the seller's fault you know.:) Take the necessary precautions because you know what's best for you.

Now that's variety. In these snacks and foods I can see Indonesian, Chinese, American and Spanish influence. Here in Cambodia there is basically one religion, language, and ethnic group, so the food is kind of boring, and exactly the same wherever you go in the country.

You're right. It draws back to history when the Chinese introduced mercantile through the channels and of course, the 3 century Spanish colonization which was deeply rooted to Filipino culture notwithstanding the influence during American occupation. The Philippines has become a melting pot not only among its people but also the variety of cuisines it has instilled in our savoury food preferences and so enticingly overwhelming!
