You can't believe much in what the newspapers say anymore. They say that the largest ship in the world, the one that was never going to sink, sank halfway to New York. I don't believe it. The steam machine and the way we've mastered steel makes me think that soon that shipload of new people with big dreams will arrive and I'll watch them gape as they look at the Statue of Liberty right at the entrance to this crazy, upward-growing city. For me, on the other hand, this life between concrete and steel has made me tired. I will go on that same ship back to England and then to the Ireland of my grandparents. I want to visit them and if I like that country life, I think I will stay with them.

Ya no se puede creer mucho en lo que dicen los periódicos. Dicen que el barco más grande del mundo, el que no se iba a hundir nunca, naufragó a mitad de camino hacia Nueva York. Yo no lo creo. La máquina de vapor y la manera en que hemos dominado el acero me hace pensar que pronto llegará ese barco cargado de gente nueva con grandes sueños y los veré quedarse boquiabiertos al mirar la estatua de la Libertad justo a la entrada de esta ciudad de locos que crece hacia arriba.
