Hi, welcome back to the #monomad photo parade
This time I want to show students' performances in several traditional dances in Indonesia.
The saman dance has been recognized as an indistinguishable cultural heritage by Unesci on November 24, 2011. This dance, which originates from the Gayo tribe, Aceh, is a dance that is often performed at various events, including the 2018 Asian Games sports event in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia. The grand opening of the Asian Games featured the saman dance performed by around 1,600 students in a colossal manner.
In student activities at Malikussaleh University, Lhokseumawe, Aceh (Indonesia), students from Gayo Lues, also performed the saman dance. Their performance was one of the dances that invited the audience's admiration.
The same dance was performed by male dancers with fast and rhythmic movements. In several regions and during the opening of the Asian Games, the saman dance was also performed by women and it did not reflect the real saman dance. If performed by female dancers, it is called tar ratoh jaroe. This is not widely known, including in Aceh.
This dance does not use musical instruments. The sound of the music comes from the dancers' clapping, clapping on the chest, and clapping on the floor. Therefore, the saman dance is not suitable to be performed on a ceramic or cement stage because it does not produce a beautiful sound. However, the stage is usually made of wood so that the sound is loud.
As part of the list of intangible cultural heritage from Unesco, the saman dance is maintained and preserved by the people of Aceh, especially in Gayo Lues. Every year, the Gayo Lues district government holds a sama kolosan dance and becomes a tourist attraction there.
In addition to the saman dance, Malikussaleh University students also performed a number of dances from their respective regions. Malikussaleh University students come from various regions in Indonesia, from Aceh in the far west to Papua in the far east. Usually, in the dance skills competition, they perform traditional dances from their respective regions.
Because of the poses and movements of the dance, some of the photos are not beautiful when shot in landscape. So, I had to shoot them in portrait position to better suit the movements and positions of the dancers.
There are three dances performed in this black and white photo parade. On another occasion, I will post other more stunning dances. Thank you for your support.[]
