I quit! Not hive, or anything in particular for that matter, I just felt the need to express that sentiment. It's Derby weekend and if that don't put you in a hostile mood, you either don't live in Louisville or have entirely too much money. (See Hunter S. I haven't been as active on here recently as I would like, for a variety of reasons. I aim to fix that directly, I have a plan! No plan survives contact so we'll see how that goes... Some of my recent posts have reinforced my suspicion that most people just look at the photos and maybe skim the writing, so I'm going to experiment with doing things a little differently. It was starting to feel like I was writing about 'heavy' shit most of the time and that just wears on a feller after a while, and can't be all that much more enjoyable to read.
Up til now every upvote I've handed out has been done manually but I'm thinking it may finally be time to change that. I spent too much time as a teenager making computers do things the adults didn't realize they could for me to not be suspicious of autovoters but I reckon I've had enough of a 'wait and see.' So, anybody got any warnings or recommendations for autovoters? I'm not worried about returns, I just want to be more consistent in supporting the peoples I like.
Photos are from last year's covid delayed Kentucky Derby, or at least from as close as you could get to it without getting arrested. They want the people in the funny hats' money too badly to risk scaring them off with snipers and Humvees with ACAV mounts, so it should be quite a bit different this year. The valets (for the horses, not the vehicles) are threatening to strike tomorrow so there may be a picket line. If there is it could be a little interesting and might actually be enough to get me to come within a mile of the drunken mess that is Churchill Downs.
Ever since I worked my first Derby (2006 I think) I've had a tradition that always puts me right for the events to come. For me it's not Derby until I've read the Hunter Thompson piece mentioned above and listened to the song below (it's kinda a cover but it's the damndest cover band I ever did see). Most of the time I read the posts before voting. More often than not, I read five or six posts before finding something to vote on.
The pictures of military police at the Kentucky Derby is disconcerting. There is something disconcerting about the way that our society is systematically turning named events into these little culture battlegrounds.
I like the equestrian world, but I have never had a taste for either horse racing or rodeo. I don't see the need to turn equestrian events into spectacles.
I've tried to be a bit particular with who I followed so I don't have to sort through quite as many posts between votes but I'm much the same way. I've had several experiences where I've created posts specifically to spark discussion and got nothing. The upvotes would come in but the engagement was either off topic or absent entirely. Don't know if I was just going about it wrong or what but I'm going to play around a bit and see what happens.
That whole day was disconcerting. Multiple militias turned up numbering in the hundreds, LMPD acting like an occupying army (I got photos of a police sniper with a suppressed rifle watching us), and off course the MPs. The whole thing had an element of theatre to it, just a show of force because they could (even the police horses were in riot gear).

Rewarding.app is the most reliable autovoter although the interface isn't user friendly. There are a lot of little tweaks you can do, such as excluding certain types of posts

I never have and never will understand watching horses race around a track. I guess it’s kind of the same as people running around a track… kind of, but not really. A bunch of people with their noses in the air, throwing money around… ya, not my type of gig. To think the military was used to stop a horse race over a nasty flu… 🤔🤔

It's kinda like watching NASCAR but with with more death and less fiery stuff (at least on the track, infield is a different story). I worked in one of the restaurants at the track for a few years and a bunch of people with their noses in the air, throwing money around sums up Derby and Churchill Downs quite nicely...if it rained, most of them would drown. It's been a long time since many of the locals could afford to go, most people here just throw Derby parties and get wasted at home.

White girl wasted, precisely. Lol, that's one I ain't heard in a while. At least one year they were climbing on top of the porta-pots in the infield and seeing how far they could run before falling off. Some of them even won a prize and got a pair of shiny bracelets and a free ride downtown. At least when I was working at the track most of the staff was almost equally as drunk 🤣
DAHAHAHAHA WTH!! We have the Hydroplane races on the Columbia River and it used to be the WILD!! It’s become more of a family event nowadays.

I don't envy your horse race nonsense. There are local sports here like bloomsday, hoopfest, and iron man that disrupt traffic and make life miserable for those of us with normal stuff to do.
Yeah, the conversations are much of what makes this place fun. Still not sure what happened to them though.
Curangel is one of the things that got me thinking about autovoters, so I don't have to worry about upvoting the daily roundup post. I tend to get on here in streaks, it'd be nice to put my VP to use when I am off doing other things.

I still intend to continue voting manually for the most part, I mostly want it for things like photofeed and monochromes daily posts, projects I want to support even when I'm away from hive.
