The Gear Cycle and the Power of Simplicity ESP/ENG

When I started in photography, I wanted gear, I needed gear, I desired more gear—and little by little, as I became a more complete professional, I began acquiring the essentials and later refined them with some specialization.

Cuando empecé en la fotografía, quería equipos, necesitaba equipos, deseaba tener más equipos, y poco a poco, a medida que me fui volviendo un profesional más completo, fui adquiriendo lo mínimo indispensable y luego especializándolos un poco más.

Currently, I don’t own super high-end gear, but I do have the minimum and a little more—enough to allow me to do almost any type of photography, except for high-speed flash photography. At the same time, I began defining my own style more clearly. These photos, for example, are ones I really like, and I didn’t use flash or any extraordinary equipment—just photography that (in my view, at least) focuses on how natural light interacts.

Actualmente, no tengo los súper equipos, pero sí tengo lo mínimo indispensable y un poco más, como para permitirme hacer casi cualquier tipo de fotografía, a excepción de fotografías con flash en altas velocidades. Pero también fui definiendo mejor mi estilo propio, y estas fotografías me gustan bastante, pero en ellas no uso flash ni un equipo extraordinario, sino que es una fotografía que se centra (en mi visión por lo menos) en cómo la luz natural incide.

This happens to me in every area, and I believe other artists or professionals go through it too—you try out materials, get obsessed with more advanced techniques, master them, and then go back to the simplest ones, only to later learn something more specialized and return to the basics again. This cycle is beautiful when it happens, because even if you return to the same “place,” you are never the same.

En todas las áreas me pasa, y creo que a otros artistas o profesionales les pasa también: pruebas materiales, te empeñas en técnicas más avanzadas, las dominas y vuelves a lo más sencillo, para luego aprender algo más especializado y volver a lo básico. Este proceso me parece algo muy lindo cuando ocurre, porque a pesar de que vuelves a un mismo "lugar", nunca eres el mismo.
