Hello dear friends in the #Hive!.... Welcome to another edition of my monochrome street photography series. This time I want to share with you some photographs from one of the first foggy mornings we've had this season. Here the rainy season starts in May (more or less, because with the impact of "climate change" everything has changed a bit these last years) and that's when we start having foggy mornings.... And that's good for street photography!

¡Hola queridos amigos en #Hive!... Bienvenidos a otra edición de mi serie de fotografías de calle en monocromático. En esta ocasión quiero compartir con ustedes algunas fotografías de uno de los primeras mañanas con niebla que hemos tenido esta temporada. Aquí el período de lluvias comienza en Mayo (más o menos, pues con el impacto "cambio climático" todo se ha trastocado un poco estos últimos años) y es entonces cuando comenzamos a tener nieblas en las mañanas... ¡Y eso es bueno para la fotografía callejera!

As many of you may already know thanks to my previous publications, I take these photographs in Montalbán (Carabobo State, Venezuela) the town where I live. And this is a town that has not escaped the economic and social impact caused by the deep crisis that has been going on since the beginning of this century in our country. So, taking pictures here has the visual and emotional implications of a place in decline, which has seen its population decrease by almost two thirds compared to what it was in 1999, and with it all its infrastructure and local economy.

Como quizás muchos de ustedes ya sepan gracias a mis previas publicaciones, hago estas fotografías en Montalbán (Estado Carabobo, Venezuela) el pueblo donde vivo. Y este es un pueblo que no ha escapado al impacto económico y social causado por la profunda crisis que se vive desde comienzos de este siglo en nuestro país. Entonces hacer fotografías aquí tiene las implicaciones visuales y emotivas propias de un lugar en franca decadencia, que ha visto su población disminuir en casi dos tercios versos lo que había en 1999 y con ello toda su infraestructura y economía local.

However, according to my point of view, all this problematic and complex environment, makes the streets of the village full of eloquent and very precise scenes for monochromatic style photography... I have always thought that when we want a photo to make the observer think, the best thing to do is to leave color aside... But I know, I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said before, but it happens that "the fog" in these streets, makes all that I said before, more forceful and palpable.

Entonces, según mi punto de vista, todo este entrono problemático y complejo, hace que las calles del pueblo estén colmadas de escenas elocuentes y muy precisas para la fotografía en estilo monocromático... Siempre he pensado que cuando deseamos que una foto haga pensar a quien la observa, lo mejor es dejar entonces a un lado el color... Pero ya sé, no estoy diciendo nada que no se haya dicho antes, pero sucede que "la niebla" en estas calles, haga que todo eso que dije antes, sea más contundente y palpable.

For this set of street photos in particular, I wanted to capture the psychic impact the fog generates on me through an editing technique that is relatively different from the one I use on a regular basis. So, because I captured all of these photos in RAW format and processed them using Adobe Camera RAW to adjust highlights and shadows, desaturate in grayscale (in Camera Raw itself), and do color-by-color luminance adjustments with a few variations on contrast light curves for the entire photograph, thus achieving a "base black and white" result and exporting this as JPG files.

Para esta edición de fotografias callejeras en particular, he querido plasmar el impacto psíquico que genera la niebla en mí a través de una técnica de edición relativamente distinta a la que uso de manera habitual. Entonces, como capturé todas estas fotografías en formato RAW y las procesé usando Adobe Camera RAW para ajustar las luces y las sombras, desaturar en escala de grises (en el mismo Camera Raw) y hacer ajustes de luminancia color por color con unas cuantas variaciones en las curvas de luz contraste para la fotografía completa, logrando así un resultado de "blanco y negro base" y exportando esto en archivos JPG.

It so happened that I didn't find the result "dramatic enough" this time around and because of this I wanted to venture a little further by editing the JPG images a bit more. This is how I experimented with additional attenuated layers on top of the base photo, in these layers the general tone was 6% yellow, this with the intention of achieving a result close to the "vintage black and white" which I like so much.

Ocurrió entonces que no encontré el resultado lo "suficiente dramático" esta vez y debido a esto quise aventurarme un poco editando un poco más las imágenes JPG. Así fue como experimenté con capas adicionales atenuadas sobre la foto base, en estas capas la tonalidad general era de un 6% de amarillo, esto con la intención de logar un resultado cercano al "blanco y negreo vintage" el cual tanto me gusta.

The first results were downright tacky, as there was something that made the photos look like they were made with "a little mustard and chewing tobacco paste" but I didn't give up and "burned the ships" and proceeded to melt down the layers and store them like that to continue editing. I presume that the problem was using 6% yellow, since I had done similar things before with only 1% and the results were good. However, everything was resolved favorably by simply making gradual saturation adjustments on each photo, always depending on their particular characteristics. I also adjusted (again) the input and output levels, because (as almost always happens to me) "each photo behaved differently"... Just as I got this set of 10 photos that are quite similar in tone, in a way let's say "very handmade".

Los primeros resultados fueron francamente vulgares, pues había algo que hacía parecer las fotos como hechas con "un poco de mostaza y pasta de tabaco para masticar" pero no me dí por vencido y "quemé las naves" y procedí fundir las capas y a guardarlas así para seguir editando. Presumo que el problema fue usar un 6% de amarillo, pues había hecho cosas similares antes con apenas un 1% y los resultados eran buenos. Sin embargo, todo se resolvió favorablemente simplemente haciendo ajustes de saturación graduales en cada foto, siempre dependiendo de las características particulares de las mismas. También ajusté (nuevamente) los niveles de entrada y salida, pues (como casi siempre me sucede) "cada foto se comportó de manera distinta"... Así como obtuve este conjunto de 10 fotografías bastante similares en cuanto a tono, de una manera digamos "muy artesanal".

I took these pictures using my old Nikon D7000 with a Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8d FX lens which is very bright and therefore ideal for foggy atmospheric conditions. Just make it work with f/5 aperture and ISO 320 to be able to take photos on the streets without worrying too much about shutter speeds, as they tend to be high enough to provide sharpness even though this is not an automatically stabilized lens.

Hice estas fotografías usando mi vieja Nikon D7000 con un objetivo Nikon AF Nikkor 50 mm f/1.8d FX el cual es muy luminoso y por lo tanto ideal para condiciones de atmósfera con nieblas. Basta con hacerlo trabajar con apertura f/5 e ISO 320 para poder por las calles disparando fotos sin preocuparse demasiado por las velocidades de obturación, pues tienden a ser lo suficientemente altas para proveer nitidez aunque este no sea un lente estabilizado automáticamente.

This set of photos is also my entry to today's #monomad challenge... As you know "I love being here" because #monomad is something like the "best idea I've come across" for sharing black and white photos. ..
