Several years ago I visited for the first time the Caracas cable car system located in Waraira Repano or Avila National Park. I was as impressed by the ride in the cabins over a landscape of lush mountains as I was by what I found at the top: beautiful views of the city and nature, places to eat, cultural events, little shops and especially the imposing Hotel Humboldt.

Hace varios años visité por primera vez el sistema teleférico de Caracas ubicado en el Parque Nacional Waraira Repano o Ávila. Me impresionó tanto el viaje en las cabinas sobre un paisaje de frondosas montañas como lo que encontré arriba: hermosas vistas hacia la ciudad y la naturaleza, sitios para comer, eventos culturales, tienditas y especialmente el imponente Hotel Humboldt.

The cable car was inaugurated in December 1955 and quickly became a major tourist attraction. A little more than a year later, in the first station of this system called Avila, the Hotel Humboldt opened its doors, which is 2,140 meters above sea level and can be seen from many points of the Venezuelan capital, which made it an icon of Caracas.

El teleférico fue inaugurado en diciembre de 1955 y rápidamente se convirtió en una gran atracción turística. Poco más de un año después, en la primera estación de este sistema llamada Ávila, abrió sus puertas el Hotel Humboldt, el cual está a 2.140 metros sobre el nivel del mar y puede ser visto desde muchos puntos de la capital venezolana, lo que lo convirtió en todo un icono de Caracas.

I have always been a fan of architecture, especially modernist architecture, so this circular building made me sigh several times. It was designed by Venezuelan architect Tomás Sanabria, who made it a reality together with engineers Gustavo Larrazábal and Oscar Urreiztieta.

Siempre he sido fan de la arquitectura, sobre todo la modernista, así que este edificio circular me sacó varios suspiros. Su diseño estuvo a cargo del arquitecto venezolano Tomás Sanabria, quien lo hizo realidad junto a los ingenieros Gustavo Larrazábal y Oscar Urreiztieta.

The Humboldt Hotel has 19 floors, a height of almost 60 meters and 70 rooms. From its top you can have a 360º view.

El Hotel Humboldt tiene 19 pisos, una altura de casi 60 metros y 70 habitaciones. Desde su cima se puede tener una vista de º360.

I don't remember if it was operational when I visited it but they allowed the public access to several areas such as the dining room, lounges, the indoor pool, among others. Currently, after a restoration process that began in 2012 and ended in 2018, it is fully recovered and offering all services: accommodation, restaurant, bars, gym, pool, spa, event spaces and more. Spending a night there is quite expensive but it sure is a unique experience. I show you below some of the spaces I was in that day. The period furniture, from the '50s - '60s of the twentieth century very well preserved, made me feel as if I had gone through the time machine.

No recuerdo si estaba operativo cuando lo visité pero permitían al público acceder a varias áreas como el comedor, salas de estar, la piscina techada, entre otras. Actualmente, tras un proceso de restauración que comenzó en 2012 y terminó en 2018, se encuentra totalmente recuperado y ofreciendo todos los servicios: alojamiento, restaurante, bares, gimnasio, piscina, spa, espacios para eventos y más. Pasar una noche allí es bastante costoso pero seguro es una experiencia única. Les muestro a continuación algunos de los espacios en los que estuve ese día. El mobiliario de la época, años '50 - '60 del siglo XX muy bien conservado, me hizo sentir como si hubiera pasado por la máquina del tiempo.

We walked through the entrance to the reception area, saw several lounges, the bar and a restaurant.

Pasamos por la entrada hacia la recepción, vimos varias salas de estar, el bar y un restaurante.

Finally we went to see the famous indoor swimming pool, which was not in operation at the time, its design is really very striking. Now restored, it is heated and has even massaging hydro jets for people to relax.

Finalmente fuimos a ver la famosa piscina techada, la cual no estaba en funcionamiento en ese momento, realmente su diseño es muy llamativo. Hoy en día ya restaurada, está climatizada y tiene hasta hidrojets masajeadores para que la gente se relaje.
