A Mosque after being burned by the Dutch Army

in Photo-essay4 months ago

Today, together with @fooart I visited a mosque in our peaceful city. Its name is the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh. You need to know, this mosque is a legacy of the Aceh king which was built around the 15th century. However, towards the end of the 18th century this mosque was burned by the Dutch army after being frustrated in not being able to defeat the brave Aceh army. It happened around March-April 1873.

And, at that time a Dutch officer was killed, namely J.H.R Kohler, shot by the Aceh Darussalam state troops.

This afternoon, in the middle of the cool city weather, we performed the Asr prayer while enjoying the atmosphere and building of the mosque which was rebuilt by the Dutch to regain the sympathy of the Acehnese people after they burned it down.

The architect of the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh is Gerrit van Bruins, an engineer captain from the Dutch army.

Gerrit van Bruins consulted with Snouck Hurgronje and K.H. Hasan Mustapa, a penghulu from Bandung, to determine the style of the mosque building.

The architectural style of the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is Middle Eastern with a touch of Mughal architecture.
The Baiturrahman Grand Mosque has a magnificent architecture with a high roof and a large dome decorated with traditional Islamic ornaments.

The Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is one of the favorite religious tourism destinations for tourists in Banda Aceh City.

The Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is also a symbol of the struggle and spread of Islam in Indonesia to the Southeast Asian peninsula.

The Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is a new milestone in the field of mosque architecture and a marker for mosques with modern architecture.
