I came across this post on one of the Reddit journal subs I follow. Someone asked if anyone used coded messages in their journal to keep things private and it got me thinking.
What do other people do to keep their journal private. I have a standard warning message I put in the front of mine:
STOP (or Caution)
The words in this journal do not always represent the truth.
This is not meant for you or for anyone other than the author.
Emotions, ranting, and odd dreams fill these pages. Enter at
your own risk and peril. You have been warned.
And I don't hide it. It's in plain sight left in my home office mostly but I also travel with it quite a bit. I've never had anyone read it but we're a close trusting bunch in this house so I never thought I needed to hide it.
But I discovered there are others that have not had the same experience and go through some great lengths to keep their journals hidden. Here are some real life examples of what you can do if you want to keep your journal private:
- keep it in a safe in the closet
- under the mattress
- in a box with stuff piled on top
- between the bed and the wall
- in clothes pockets in the closet
- get one with a number combination on it
- write in code
- put a decoy journal in plain sight
- use ink that only appears under UV light
There are so many other examples I found online and after reading them all it feels like a lot of work to me. I don't know if I'd journal as much if I had to go through the process of hiding it each time.
Do you keep your journal hidden and what's worked for you?

There's a part of me that thinks an annual bonfire might be the best place for a completed journal. Especially if I'm not going to go back through to read them and I certainly don't want anyone else reading them.
