Growing potatoes for the first time... And maybe 200kg of them! [EN/FR]

Hello gardeners, I did my very first planting this weekend, and I wanted to share all that with you on Hive!

Next to our place there is a nursery. We had never seen a sign indicating its location and so we were not aware of it until last Friday while looking for the best prices online to buy sprouted potatoes.

With @altheana, we bought 100 sprouted potatoes. They are Charlottes, supposedly the best for making fries. We’ll see how it turns out.

On our land, a few weeks ago, we had added some sheets to smother the grass and prevent it from growing in the spring. This is where I wanted to plant my potatoes. I had planned to plant only about twenty and plant something else next to them, but I wanted to see if the 100 would fit in this space.

When removing the sheets, there were actually a lot of young grass shoots growing strongly. To really do things right, I should have placed the sheets this winter, and not in March. But we didn’t live here yet, so this year it’ll be like that!

I don’t have a broadfork to aerate the soil, but I have a kind of fork. I use it to create 4 rows and leave space between each row to be able to walk.

I'm glad I thought of these “free” rows to walk on because I know otherwise how tricky it is not to step on plants once they’ve grown.

There were a lot of big roots in the soil. Making these 4 rows wasn’t easy at all. I thought I’d spend 1 hour on it, but it took me twice as long!

Now I just had to plant the potatoes. In hindsight, I could have made it easier (and saved my back) by going to buy straw that I would have just had to spread on my growing area, then simply placed my potatoes on top (so not planting them) before adding another layer of straw.

But I’ll try that method next year. It’s no big deal!

My technique was to dig a trench 15 to 20 centimeters deep before placing my sprouted potatoes in it and spacing them 20 to 30 centimeters apart from each other.

Digging the trenches and placing the potatoes ended up being almost as much work as turning the soil over 4 rows.

Then, it was really a bonus, but on each plant, I added a bit of potting soil to help with growth. I don’t know if it’s really useful, but it can’t hurt.

Finally, I covered each trench with soil. On the last row, I added mulch made from dead leaves. I wanted to do it on all the rows, but I didn’t have enough leaves and it started to rain.

Anyway, if the harvest bears fruit (or rather, potatoes), we should harvest between 100 and 200 kg of potatoes. That would be more than enough for our consumption. So we’ll be able to share some with family, friends and neighbors!

Bonjour les jardiniers, j'ai fait ma toute première plantation ce week-end, et je voulais vous partager tout ça sur Hive !

À côté de chez nous se trouve une pépinière. On n'avait jamais vu de panneau indiquant son emplacement et nous n’en avions donc pas connaissance jusqu'à vendredi dernier en regardant les meilleurs prix sur Internet pour acheter des pommes de terre germées.

Avec @altheana, nous avons donc acheté 100 pommes de terre germées. Ce sont des Charlottes, à priori les meilleures pour faire des frites. On verra bien ce que ça donnera.

Sur notre terrain, il y a quelques semaines, nous avions ajouté des tôles pour étouffer l'herbe et éviter qu'elle ne pousse avec le printemps. C'est ici que je voulais planter mes pommes de terre. J'avais prévu d'en planter qu'une vingtaine et planter autre chose à côté, mais je voulais voir si les 100 allaient tenir dans cet emplacement.

En retirant les tôles, il y avait finalement beaucoup de jeunes pousses d'herbes qui poussaient avec force. Pour vraiment bien faire les choses, il aurait fallu que je positionne les tôles cet hiver, et pas au mois de mars. Mais nous n'habitions pas encore ici, donc cette année ça sera comme ça !

Je n'ai pas de grelinette pour aérer la terre, mais j'ai une sorte de fourche. Je m'en sers pour créer 4 rangées et me laisser un espace entre chaque rangée pour pouvoir marcher.

Je suis content d'avoir pensé à ces rangées "libres" pour marcher car je sais sinon à quel point il est délicat de ne pas marcher sur des plants lorsqu’ils auront poussé.

Il y avait beaucoup de grosses racines dans la terre. Faire ces 4 rangées n'a pas été de tout repos. Je pensais y passer 1h, mais j'en ai eu pour le double !

Il ne me restait maintenant plus qu'à planter les pommes de terre. Avec du recul, j'aurais pu moins me casser la tête (et le dos) en allant acheter de la paille que j'aurais juste eu à étaler sur ma zone de culture et j’y aurais ensuite simplement posé mes pommes de terre (sans les planter donc) avant de remettre par-dessus une couche de paille.

Mais je tenterai de faire cette culture l'année prochaine. Ce n'est pas grave !

Ma technique à moi consistait à creuser un sillon de 15 à 20 centimètres de profondeur avant d'y placer mes pommes de terre germées et de les espacer de 20 à 30 centimètres les unes des autres.

Creuser les sillons et y placer les pommes de terre a finalement été presque tout autant de travail que de retourner la terre sur 4 rangées.

Ensuite, c'était vraiment en plus, mais sur chaque plant, j'ai ajouté un peu de terreau pour aider à la croissance. Je ne sais pas si c'est bien utile, mais ça ne peut pas faire de mal.

Enfin, j'ai rebouché chaque sillon avec de la terre. Sur la dernière rangée, j'ai ajouté un paillage à base de feuilles mortes. Je voulais le faire sur toutes les rangées, mais je n'avais pas assez de feuilles et il s'est mis à pleuvoir.

Quoi qu'il en soit, si la récolte porte ses fruits (ou plutôt, ses pommes de terre), on devrait récolter entre 100 et 200 kg de pommes de terre. Ce qui serait largement suffisant pour notre consommation. On pourra donc en donner à la famille, amis et voisins !
