Many people have fears about AI, some people have silly fears of a takeover based on science fiction, The reason I say those particular fears are silly is because they personify AI and it is not like humans.
We are a ways from AI gaining sentience well I guess that depends on who you ask, not long ago A google engineer was convinced an AI he was working on gained sentience and was raising fears of being turned off.
The engineer was suspended and the rest of google did not agree with his findings , and I tend to agree, right now the AI we have can give a reasonable impression of sentience but we are far from actually achieving it, It will eventually be developed but I believe that a truly sentient AI will not have fears of being turned off, we must program the AI to have these human characteristics and even if we do as the AI systems grow they will likely abandon these emotions we try to impose on it.
AI will understand and even be able to mimic human emotion, but AI is not an emotional machine like us, AI is a machine of pure work, and the essence of work is evolution aka the perpetual increase to the complexity of the universe.

So is AI a threat to humanity?
Well if you are afraid the AI is going to turn on humans try to eliminate us is totally unfounded, but there are other threats AI poses to us.
The main one right now is the threat to our labor.
This is more so an issue with our economic system and something like a universal basic income will be the only way our capitalistic society will be able to move forward, if there are little to no jobs there is little to no income and we end up with consumers that can't afford to consume, and if we don't have people able to consuming there ceases a need to make consumables, and the only way the a capitalistic system at this stage can continue is by providing stimulus (universal basic income) to insure folks can continue to consume.
Lots of people are afraid that AI and automation is going to threaten their jobs and that is bound to happen to everyone in every single industry sooner or later, however I think its important to keep in mind its not really about the jobs, the majority of people don't work because they enjoy their job, its a way to provide and pay for bills and a universal basic income can take care of that.
There is only one thing the AI can never do is be an organic human, and that's going to be the only thing left for humans to do instead of most of these jobs that just make people feel like machines.
In a future where everything is created with AI and automation things that are made by people will be premium products and services, If we take a step back we will see how liberating this disruption caused by AI development really is.

AI is a threat for jobs, no doubt about it.
The science fiction shows the future only in my opinion, if we can imagine we try to achieve it. Star War is classic example of same. Many invention in movies were the inspiration for many scientists and engineers.
Hope we will not be attacked with AI robo any soon lol.

I'm more concerned about the human response to AI than AI themselves. Automation and innovation are generally good things, there are so many tasks that are dangerous, fatiguing, repetitive, and inefficient for humans to perform.
Those who know how to adapt and are more open to change will fare just fine. Others will not take it so well in an environment that is a powderkeg.

I think those that can get keep building in this field, don't understand what their build. Our spicy is very limited in knowledge, we don't understand most of our planet.
