A few days ago, June 29, was the day of Saint Peter, a saint that has special importance in Naiguatá, a town on the central Venezuelan coast with great strength and cultural wealth in its popular manifestations, expressions of an African heritage hybrid with religion Catholic and yet unsubmissive in fascinating ways.
The streets are dressed in green, hundreds of people wear the color of the saint, and in a procession of cane and drum Saint Peter seems to levitate in a kind of open box, taking a short trip surrounded by beautiful flowers on the shoulders of people that take the saint from house to house.
In these houses they receive the saint, and prepare a special place for him. The families who live there provide food and drinks to all who accompany the procession, locals and visitors, and there they dedicate verses to it, drum dancing, life is celebrated and the image of Peter is honored. This practice is a way of making pledge payments for the favors that Saint Peter has granted in that home.
The photographs are from a few years ago, when such an image did not make you think of contagions, and social distance seemed an extraterrestrial term. I miss those times very much, and I hope that in the not too distant future we will be able to resume hugs free of suspicions.
In the last photograph I am with a very dear friend dedicated to visual anthropology. And in the background, Saint John, a saint who occupies a very special place in the African heritage of various Venezuelan popular manifestations.

Hace pocos días, el 29 de junio, fue el día de San Pedro, santo que tiene especial importancia en Naiguatá, un pueblo del litoral central venezolano con mucha fuerza y riqueza cultural en sus manifestaciones populares, expresiones de una herencia africana híbrida con la religión católica y aún así insumisa en fascinantes maneras.
De verde se visten las calles, son cientos de personas que llevan el color del santo, y en una procesión de caña y tambor San Pedro parece levitar en una especie de cajón abierto, dando un viaje corto rodeado de hermosas flores sobre los hombros de quienes lo llevan de casa en casa.
En esas casas reciben al santo, a quien colocan en un lugar especial. Las familias que ahí viven brindan comida y bebidas a todos los que acompañan la procesión, lugareños y visitantes, y ahí le dedican versos, se baila tambor, se celebra la vida y se honra a la imagen de Pedro. Esta práctica es una forma de hacer pagos de promesas por los favores que San Pedro ha concedido en ese hogar.
Las fotografías son de hace algunos años, cuando una imagen así no te hacía pensar en contagios, y la distancia social parecía un término extraterrestre. Extraño mucho esos tiempos, y espero que en un futuro no muy lejano podamos retomar los abrazos libres de sospechas.
En la última fotografía estoy con un amigo muy querido dedicado a la antropología visual. Y de fondo San Juan, un santo que ocupa un lugar especialísimo en la herencia africana de varias manifestaciones populares venezolanas.
