Nigeria: Demand for a better Policing System among other things.

in GEMS4 years ago

“Due to the culture of Police brutality in Nigeria, Nigerian youths continue to demand for an overhaul of the police system. There are records of police brutality across the 35 States in Nigeria especially the unit called Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS)”.

What started as a protest soon grew into a movement for the actualization of; “a better system for police, end to bad governance, upgrade the standard of living of the citizens and other things affecting the people at large”.

We’re over 60-years as an independent state but it is quite unfortunate that as a nation we cannot boost of human and capital resources, stable (24-hours) electricity supply, buoyant economy and support for industrialization among other things.

As if these were not enough for the poor citizens of Nigeria, the reckless unit of Nigerian Police Force- SARS are still truncating young people’s lives across the country on needless demand and flimsy excuses. The level of extra-judicial killings done by the men of Police Force in Nigeria is alarming. And to add ‘salt to injury’ these officers will get away with the murder, without being tried by a competent court of law. Sickening you say?! That’s exactly what is happening in Nigeria.

What became a global movement- (#EndSARS hashtag) on Twitter today was as a result of the SARS unit of NPF extra-judicial killing that took place in Benin, Edo State, Nigeria. They killed a man and absconded with his personal car (it was recorded and posted on Twitter).
This unjust scene skyrocketed people’s blood (young & adult) which resulted to protest- End SARS and reform Police Force that kickstarted from Lagos. And it turned to a wide flame that spread across all other states in Nigeria in no time.

The protest started gaining international attention, it lasted for about 15-days. So many fracas erupted between men of Police Force and peaceful protesters. Such as unlawful torture, force detainment of protesters etc. Casualties were recorded- Jimoh Isaik, Oke and many others listed below... 💔💔

While, we don’t allow the death of our lost heroes be in vain. We made our demands known to the government. Here are the demands;
