Considering investing and gambling as two words interchangeable with each other might cause confusion and misuse of words since both have significant attributes that can be used to distinguish the former from the latter. Both might require proficiency in risk management however, the risk and choices are controllable in investing in stocks unlike in gambling where the risk is uncontrollable. In investing in stocks, you will acquire a portion of ownership of the company. This happens as you supply a fund to the company which you will have the right to claim interests or dividends in return. On the other hand, the gambler do not acquire ownership or value in gambling since its purpose is mainly for entertainment. Gambling also focuses on immediate, fast, and short-term payout while the focus in investment in stocks is acquiring value over a period of years.

Investing in stocks is only for traders is totally a misconception since a person can earn a lot of ways in stocks, not just by trading it. This is where people often forget that they acquire ownership in a company the moment they buy a share.

Trading in stocks also differs from an ordinary gambling like poker since traders have reliable sources of information available to them such as stock charts, news, business reports, financial statements, company metrics, and fundamental analysis. Investment in stocks also involve a lot of skills in analysis. In gambling, you rely mostly on luck and a little bit on the behavior of your opponents. But, you can consider gambling as an in and out strategy in trading stocks if the person wants immediate return on his/her investment.

Another difference is that the outcome in gambling only falls on whether you either win or loss while the rewards in investment cannot be lost as long as you hold on to your investment. No value is created when gambling which completely contradicts investing because the economy becomes wealthier every time you invest. When a person also invests in stocks, he/she focuses on the cash flow which is the expected consistent income on dividend payouts.

Also, gambling is less accepted in the society while investing is more encouraged. Unlike in gambling, investing in stock market increases the value of the stocks, allowing business enterprises to grow and expand. This activity thus allows the creation of employment to many people in which the country will benefit. In summation, investing in stocks is not gambling. Gambling is just a part of a strategy when a person invests in stocks especially if the person wants immediate payout. It’s not the whole essence of it, because its focus is accruing value over time, while gambling is just risking it all and hoping the dice rolls to your favor.
