What is Topcomment

I started the Topcomment initiative in mid-December 2024. My goal was to increase engagement on hive by rewarding the people that wrote high quality comments on blogs, interacting with the author.
I do this because I think comments are quite under rewarded on Hive, especially when you compare it with the rewards on blogs.
And how social is a medium when everyone just creates blogs and nobody read them or reacts to them?

How does a comment get upvoted?

Topcomment works in two ways. All hivers can nominate quality comments by mentioning @topcomment in a reply to the comment they think is high quality.
Apart from that I have some scripts that gather comments of a certain amount of length because this is a good indicator that a commenter has spend time creating a comment.
These comments are manually checked and upvoted by me.

Which comments may receive upvotes by @topcomment?

First of all I want to mention that when you nominate a comment for an upvote there is no guarantee it will get an upvote from @topcomment. There are several reasons for that which you can read below.

There are many comments on Hive, but not all can be qualified as high quality. While quality is subjective, there are a few key factors I consider when deciding whether to upvote a comment.

I also want to mention that I can only upvote a certain amount of comments every day.
This has both to do with the current stake (read on how you can support @topcomment), but also with the amount of time it takes to manually check the comments.

Besides the time constraint I have also established guidelines that a comment must meet to qualify for an upvote.

I consider a high quality comment one that is a thoughtful response to the blog post. It must show the commenter has read the post and replies to the content of the blog. It doesn't matter if the commenter agrees or disagrees with the author. It must show that the author has taken the time to create the comment.

Which comments don't get upvoted by @topcomment?

And then there are also posts that don't get upvoted. I also have made some guidlines for that.
For now they are the following!

1. Short comments
Although I don't have an exact limit for this, comments of just a few words aren't enough for an upvote.

3. Controversial subjects
I strive to keep the community positive. Although I'm not against freedom of speech I've chosen not to upvote comments on controversial subjects. So no hate speech, racism, conspiracy theories or other controversial subjects are being upvoted.

4. AI-generated comments
If I detect AI generated comments they won't get upvoted. Besides that the user will be muted so they won't receive any upvotes in the future too.

5. Comments with high rewards
If a comment has already received a substantial reward, I will not upvote it. I rather distribute it to comments that don't have rewards yet then.
I haven't set a limit on this for now.

6. Giveaways or contest entries
Entries related to giveaways or contests are excluded from Topcomment upvotes because they are encouraged to tell their own story, which to me is more a blog.

7. Low rep users (< 40)
A low reputation often indicates that a user has received a lot of downvotes. This often is because of bad behavior. This is why I don't upvote these comments as well.
