HOW I RUINED MY FUTURE WITH MY MOUTH

in GEMS4 years ago

I know you're probably wondering if I'm truly going to share a story of how I ruined my future with my mouth, actually, yes I am.

It was a Sunday afternoon, with the the sun invigorating the earth and as a normal Sunday ritual, my brother and I were to take our assignment to my dad for assistance.

As of this time, I must have been in primary 2 or 3 but I believe I was the smartest girl on earth. I was given an assignment and it read WHAT WILL YOU BECOME AFTER SCHOOL?. Meanwhile, on the day this assignment was given, I stayed in the school's sickbay all day and was unable to attend the class, and as a result of this I had no idea on what the actual topic was all about.
What will you be after school? Dad asked.

Dad had an habit of asking questions 1st before proceeding to help, just to be certain I was attentive in class.

I'll come home, have my bath, eat and observe siesta, I replied.
You will what? Dad asked out of shock.

And I repeated the same words, this time with a smile of satisfaction.

No dear, this is not what this context means, it's asking of the profession you'll take up after school, it needs answers like ' I'll be a doctor, a nurse, a lawyer or journalist' he responded.

No it can't be, I refuted to his advice.
Don't tell me the wrong answers, I'd rather fail on my own than fail from your answers, I added, hurting my dad's feeling.

On Monday, I submitted my homework after filling it to my heart's content and to my surprise I failed dangerously plus I got an additional shaming from the entire class. I didn't talk about the assignment at home because I couldn't face the ' YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO ME OR YOUR FATHER' consolation talk but this particular experience taught me a life lesson.

In our lives today, we may be victims of the same thing I faced i.e. our inability to listen to the elderly ones around us and as a result of our stubbornness they withdraw themselves from us.

Also, there may be no point wondering why we are no longer advised by them. This may be due to the fact of our pseudo believe, believing that we know it all, plus times have changed therefore their advice have become obsolete and no longer in use.

With the kind of thinking above, it is inevitable to get responses like:

Do what suits you.

If you feel it's the best thing to do, you can go ahead with it.
If that's what you want, fine then.

It is very important to understand that our parents( non biological parents too) advices are priceless and at times, they may come from an experience we are yet to have and some may advice out of the rare sight we are yet to have too( seeing the end from the beginning).

Words of the elderly should not be treated as a baby's cry, even babies get attended to once they cry out loud.

Let's all be wise and avoid unnecessary regrets.
You may get a different message from this write up but what ever you get, I hope you find it valuable and for the eye catching caption? It was just a way to get your valuable attention.

Have a beautiful week.
