🎄 Navidad, esa época donde el amor y la bondad corren por las calles… o no (?)
Pues creo que eso depende, lo que si es cierto es que detrás de esta festividad hay una historia muy interesante o, mejor dicho, dos historias muy interesantes así que con este post me gustaría explorar un poco lo que hay detrás de esta festividad y desentrañar (o por lo menos intentar desentrañar) cuál es su verdadero significado. Podríamos pensar que es poca cosa, pero tomando en cuenta que es una fiesta que es celebrada por casi toda la humanidad tal vez valga la pena observarla un poco más de cerca. 🔍

🎄 Christmas, that time where love and goodness run through the streets... or not (?) Well, I think that depends, what is true is that behind this festivity there is a very interesting story or, better said, two very interesting stories so with this post I would like to explore a little bit what is behind this festivity and unravel (or at least try to unravel) what is its true meaning. We might think it's nothing much but taking into account that it's a holiday that is celebrated by almost all of humanity it might be worth looking at a little closer. 🔍
🌟 Desde romanos adorando al sol y colgando ofrendas en los árboles del bosque para obtener mejores cosechas, pasando por una figura regordeta luchando por entrar en la chimenea de una casa para dejar juguetes o carbón, hasta el niño Dios en el pesebre rodeado de animales de granja en un pequeño pueblo de Israel, todos estos elementos van tejiendo lo que conocemos como navidad.
🌟 From Romans worshipping the sun and hanging offerings on the trees of the forest to obtain better crops, to a chubby figure struggling to enter the chimney of a house to leave toys or coal, to the child God in the manger surrounded by farm animals in a small town in Israel, all these elements are weaving what we know as Christmas.

🗺 Hoy en día cada cultura al rededor del mundo celebra las festividades de distintas formas, desde los japoneses comiendo pollo de KFC, hasta los austriacos huyendo del espectro que se lleva a los niños que se han portado mal, los ucranianos con sus telarañas doradas, los noruegos intercambiando poemas, australianos surfeando en la playa y por supuesto los venezolanos con su delicioso plato navideño y sus gaitas. En medio de todas esas tradiciones resaltan dos historias que representan lo que en esencia significa la navidad. 🌎
🗺 Today every culture around the world celebrates the holidays in different ways, from the Japanese eating KFC chicken, to the Austrians running away from the spectre of children who have misbehaved, to the Ukrainians with their golden cobwebs, to the Norwegians exchanging poems, to the Australians surfing on the beach and of course the Venezuelans with their delicious Christmas dish and bagpipes. In the midst of all these traditions, two stories stand out that represent what Christmas essentially means. 🌎

La primera historia de navidad comienza no tan al norte como tal vez pensaste, en realidad tiene su origen en una provincia de Turquía donde un hombre adinerado dejó una gran fortuna a su único hijo, el cual llevaba por nombre Nicolás di Bari. Este joven dedicó su vida a la filantropía y a donar cada centavo de su fortuna a todos los que más lo necesitaban.

The first Christmas story begins not as far north as you might think, it actually has its origin in a province of Turkey where a wealthy man left a large fortune to his only son, who was named Nicolas di Bari. This young man dedicated his life to philanthropy and to donating every penny of his fortune or all those who needed it most.

🕺 Luego de haber entregado casi todo lo que tenía decidió que aquel era un buen día para acercar se a la iglesia local, lo que no sabía era que dentro de ese templo se estaba debatiendo quien sería el próximo obispo y la acalorada discusión no había dado ningún tipo de fruto, así que los ancianos que debían encargarse de tomar aquella difícil decisión convinieron en dejar la elección al azar y que la siguiente persona que entrara por la puerta de aquel lugar fuera nombrado el nuevo obispo y justo en ese momento Nicolás entró en la iglesia y comenzó una prolífica carrera religiosa.
🕺 After having given almost everything he had he decided that this was a good day to approach the local church, what he didn't know was that inside that temple they were debating who would be the next bishop and the heated discussion had not borne any fruit, so the elders who had to take charge of making that difficult decision agreed to leave the choice to chance and that the next person who entered the door of that place would be named the new bishop and just at that moment Nicolas entered the church and began a prolific religious career.

💪 Conocido por su fuerza al momento de encargarse de defender a los más pobres y necesitados, Nicolás comenzó a ser conocido por su bondad y por los milagros que muchos creían que realizaba. Uno de los momentos más recordados de su gestión fue cuando ayudó a un grupo de niños pobres, lanzando unas monedas de oro por la chimenea de la casa de estos niños, las cuales cayeron dentro de los calcetines que uno de ellos había puesto a secar allí y otra fue la ocasión en la que ayudó dejando oro dentro de la casa de un padre soltero con tres niñas pequeñas.

💪 Known for his strength in defending the poor and needy, Nicolas began to be known for his goodness and the miracles that many believed he performed. One of the most remembered moments of his management was when he helped a group of poor children by throwing some gold coins down the chimney of the children's house, which fell into the socks that one of them had put there to dry and another was the occasion when he helped by leaving gold inside the house of a single father with three little girls.

🎅 Poco a poco la historia de aquel hombre bondadoso se expandió a tal punto que viajó hasta el otro lado del mundo. Fueron los holandeses con su fiesta "Sinterklaas" que lo llevaron a Estados Unidos, ahí el santo de los holandeses se transformó en "Santa Claus" el duende y luego volvió a Europa para unirse con otro viejito barbudo que también repartía regalos a los niños, llamado Papá Noel (si, eran dos) y ahí se volvió una sola figura. Irónicamente fue una compañía que vendía carne de reno y caribú, que, junto con Coca Cola, sentaron las bases de la figura de San Nicolás, el viejo del polo norte que reparte los regalos al rededor del mundo en su trineo mágico con renos voladores.

La Gran historia de la Navidad (claro está, puede que creas o no que este relato y eso lo respeto mucho, en mi caso si lo creo)

Una cálida noche en un pequeño pueblo del medio oriente de una nación oprimida por el imperio Romano, una mujer encinta buscaba un sitio donde poder descansar de un largo viaje, sin conseguir ni un solo lugar libre, ella y su esposo tuvieron que pasar la noche en un establo donde la mujer comenzó a tener dolores de parto. Aquella joven sentía una gran responsabilidad, el pueblo judío había esperado por siglos a un salvador, "El Mesías prometido" y ella sería la encargada de traerlo al mundo. Imagínate por un momento aquella escena, Dios (creador de todo lo que existe) llegando al mundo convertido en un pequeño bebé, envuelto en trozos de tela en aquella cueva, mientras dormía en el recipiente donde colocaban la comida del ganado.

The great story of Christmas (of course, you may or may not believe this story and I respect that very much, in my case I do)

One warm night in a small town in the Middle East of a nation oppressed by the Roman Empire, a pregnant woman was looking for a place to rest after a long journey. Not finding a single free place, she and her husband had to spend the night in a stable where the woman began to have labor pains. That young woman felt a great responsibility, the Jewish people had been waiting for centuries for a savior, "The promised Messiah" and she would be in charge of bringing him into the world. Imagine for a moment that scene, God (creator of everything that exists) coming into the world as a little baby, wrapped in pieces of cloth in that cave, while he slept in the container where they put the food for the cattle.

🐑 Unos pastores se encontraban con sus ovejas y les fue anunciado el nacimiento de aquel niño con la siguiente frase: "la señal será que encontraran a un niño envuelto en pañales" y fueron para ser testigos del acontecimiento. Así mismo, astrónomos estudiosos del cielo (no se especifica cuantos eran), llegaron para traerle regalos: Oro (que para los judíos representaba la realeza), Incienso (Era una forma de comunicar su devoción a Dios) y por último la mirra (Perfume para embalsamar a los muertos), dando a entender con estos presentes que Dios se había acercado al mundo y eso era bueno para todos los hombres. ✝️
🐑 Some shepherds were with their sheep and the birth of that child was announced to them with the following phrase: "the sign will be that they will find a child wrapped in swaddling clothes" and they went to witness the event. Also astronomers, students of the sky (it is not specified how many they were), came to bring him gifts: gold (which for the Jews represented royalty), incense (it was a way of communicating their devotion to God) and finally myrrh (perfume to bind the dead), giving to understand with these presents that God had approached the world and that was good for all men. ✝️

Tal vez en este punto te estarás preguntando: "Ajá, pero ¿Qué tiene que ver esto con la Navidad? Pues, esto se relaciona con la Navidad esencialmente por dos razones, la primera es que la palabra Navidad viene del término del latín "Nativitatis" que significa nacimiento, es decir, que en esta festividad se conmemora el nacimiento de Jesús, o esa es la razón principal de ser y la segunda es que en el año 354 la iglesia católica tomó una festividad llamada "el nacimiento del sol" (El solsticio) que se celebraba a mediados de diciembre para celebrar también el nacimiento de Jesús. 🌄

Un dato: Si bien es cierto que la navidad se celebra el nacimiento de Jesús, la fecha más probable de su nacimiento fue en el mes de abril.

En conclusión, la navidad es una fecha que verdaderamente me parece especial, es un momento que en esencia nos lleva a pensar en la bondad, amor, solidaridad y a poner nuestra mirada en lo que es realmente importante, ayudar al prójimo y dar lo mejor de nosotros en el futuro. Más allá de los adornos y los colores, me parece realmente significativo pensar en lo que podemos hacer por quien tenemos a nuestro alrededor. 🎄

In conclusion, Christmas is a date that truly seems special to me, it is a moment that in essence leads us to think about kindness, love, solidarity and to put our eyes on what is really important, to help others and to give the best of ourselves in the future. Beyond the decorations and colors, I think it is really significant to think about what we can do for those around us. 🎄
