Hi guys! It’s been a while — how are you all?
Today, I was able to harvest some of the maize I planted for my family. However, I noticed that caterpillars are infesting some of the maize, increasing the rate at which it spoils and also causing the unwanted death of some plants, leading to lower yield.
I hope that, over the years, I’ll be able to get the right insecticides to control these pests.
In addition, I am preparing the ground for the next planting operation, as this first hervest is coming to an end.
What are the mistakes I made that we should avoid?
Selection: The breed of maize I selected was not really a good one.
Weeding: Although the timing was okay, I did not weed properly. It is advisable to keep weeds out of the equation to get a better yield.
Fertilizing: I did not fertilize the maize enough, which also led to a lower yield.
Watering: Watering the crops is not an easy task, but let’s hope the rain does better this time.
I’m just someone who farms to feed his family. Hopefully, the God of harvest will bless us bountifully.
Below, I have the pictures of the infested maize and I also have some maize ready to cook at the end of the page.
Thanks agriculture experts.
Thanks @mattsanthonyit
Bye!
@thereeyorfamily I think well whenever you want to get another Maize 🌽🌽 species. It must be an hybrid one. This means that even they MAIZE itself has some potentials of eradicating pest and diseases. I have gotten into this shoes so many times although even the hybrid ones maybe affected too but not always. You should also make sure that the soil you are planting is very fertile.
You’re right—hybrid maize varieties usually resist pests and diseases better, and fertile soil is important too. I asked a farmer friend, and he said he’ll sell me some seeds. Thanks, @mattsanthonyit , for the good suggestion! God bless you.
