I know, I know, many of us have seen the awkward discord server message claiming that they would give you 2 bitcoin if you send them one, that and the annoying Vitalik Buterin giveaways are all to common, and unfortunately still effective and profitable, pilling millions of dollars of stealed cryptocurrency every year.
However, that's not what I meant
When I talk about crypto heists, I refer to Coinbase being drained, banks getting hit, etc.
So far I trust their security, and I assume they are paranoid and effective.
However, with the price of Bitcoin showing no signs of exhaustion and a realistic probability of breaking 1 million dollars per coin soon, I think is reasonable to expect a big -mission impossible type- heist every now and then, the incentives are just to powerful at this stage.
And you know what, it doesn't even have to be a small team of genius hackers doing it, it could be a jealous state that wants to fund their sovereign bonds with bitcoin, but finding itself without the ability to buy up bitcoin, with Venezuela and North Korea in precarious situations, these bitcoin heists seem just a matter of time, and in fact North Korea is already doing it on a smaller scale.
For this reason, I would like to share a quick list of things you could do to reduce your risk, here they are:
1.- Have the biggest share of your crypto on your personal wallet, a hardware wallet is specially recommendable
2.- Obtain bitcoin, not wrapped versions, you need the real deal, not a pegged token on another blockchain, many bitcoin heist hunters might target smart contracts first, since they are more vulnerable.
3.- Security through obscurity
Don't brag that you are a bitcoin millionaire, don't raise jealousy, keep your head down and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

I guess you don't follow the news much. There was a heist last week, the owner of a crypto exchange in Turkey went missing with $2 Billion worth of investors bitcoin.

Just like anything in life, the more money is involved the more scammers it will attract. Working in IT for 20 years, I've learned its the common sense stuff that gets companies in trouble. Company SolarWinds made national news for causing countless hacks for the government and Fortune 500 companies. It wasn't some sophisticated malware. They left the password on their FTP server Password123. Back when the credit card companies got hacked it was because someone left backup tapes in an unlocked car. A lot of advice that is out there seems like "no duh" but its the stuff that gets people in trouble.
Yeah, basically human nature at work, sadly.

Yeap, this is just the beginning.
Just the usual, scammers are scamming and hackers are stealing your money, they just moved from banks to crypto, as long as crypto will be relevant (forever) they will keep coming.
Particularly in my country Venezuela, the government, with its cryptocurrency mining and development program managed and executed by senior military commanders, is working on this possibility that is real and would allow them to get easy and untraceable money. So keep an eye on your passwords and wallets.

Yep. I frequently get unreal offers of rewards if I just click this or sign-up for that offer. All scams, or at least scammy. I can't help but check out the links through a scam advisor, though. It's about as far as I can allow myself to venture since there are few ways to recover your funds. Even though ways are rare themselves.

I never talk about how much I have and don't live a life that shows how much I have. No reason to. If someone asks how much crypto I have I simply reply enough lol
