All Those Tokens and What They Each Do...

A while back, I promised myself I would make an effort to gain a better understanding of Hive's second layer communities, along with all the many tokens we have that are generally traded on Hive-Engine.

I set out to start doing that a few months back and soon realized that it's a monumental project to truly dig down inside how it all works, in a meaningful way.

Sometimes, I can't help but think that only the people who actually create their own community and token understand how it works and even then I only think they actually understand how their own system works, but not really how all the systems work.

Makes me think that maybe I bit off more than I could chew here, but I haven't forgotten about this particular endeavor so I'm still studying and endeavoring!

The reason I got triggered back into writing a little bit about this again, is that it never ceases to amaze me how often yet another new token suddenly shows up in my Hive-Engine wallet, with no particular explanation.

Whenever that happens, it's usually the result of one of the many "investment" tokens or one of the "tipping" tokens we have on the platform taking on another third token and you end up with a little tiny fraction of it as a tip. Or a dividend.

So what do we do? Do we study it? Do we ignore it? Do we simply send the tiny fraction to the @null account so as to keep our wallet looking semi tidy?

These are all good questions and I find myself trying to categorize everything before I can even get started on each individual item.

For now, I am saving them for future research.

It all brings me back to a question I posed many years ago about how many cyrptocurrencies the world really needs? The consensus answer seems to be "infinitely many," but the question remains: After the first few hundreds, or thousands or tens of thousands, how many people are actually going to care about your new token... and is that enough to sustain anything of lasting value, or will it just become a long series of "flashes in the pan?"

I don't have any ready answers, but I do find it all pretty fascinating!

Thanks for visiting, and till the next one!
