This week I finished reading a book called Helpmeet by Naben Ruthnum. It was another very short novella of only 85 pages. This one could easily be read in a day or over a weekend, which makes it perfect for padding your book reading numbers.

The author is Canadian and the genre for this book is "body horror," which isn't a genre that I am overly familiar with and not one I read normally. That being said, I don't have a good reference base to compare it. I personally didn't find this one to be scary or disturbing in any way though. I would probably describe it more as supernatural than horror myself. I found it more interesting and entertaining than anything.

There is a good description listed on the back cover that I like.

a uniquely unsettling Gothic love story.

I think that is a pretty fitting description myself.

Brief Synopsis

The book is short so I'll keep the synopsis brief. It is essentially about a woman who cares for her dying husband who is suffering from a strange and gruesome illness. I don't want to give away too much if anyone actually wants to read it. The book explores themes of infidelity, marriage and partner devotion, the caregiver relationship and disease with body horror.

Synopsis with Spoilers

I'm going to include a section with a more detailed description now, for those that do not plan on reading it. I will be including spoilers in this section so Skip the small print if you don't want the ending to be spoiled.

The husband contracts a strange disease from a woman that he is having an affair with. The wife knows of the affair and has accepted it and takes care of her husband as his body goes through a gruesome transformation process. The wife is a nurse by profession so she is at ease with the mans care. She can remove herself emotionally from the situation and act as his nurse I mean. She also still deeply cares for him. The mans nose turns color and falls off, his eyes fall out, as do his teeth. Eventually his tongue falls out as well and it ends up just being tossed in the fire. The mans skin changes, he experiences intense pain and then comes the climax. The mans back rips open and a strange parasitic supernatural organism that resembles a flower emerges from the mans body. It walks around on hard tipped petals. We find out that the woman who the husband had an affair with had been instructed by the parasite on how to resurrect it. She comes to collect the parasite at the end and she unexpectedly also gets taken over by it. The husband and wife actually live on, but in the most bizarre way imaginable. The parasite shows the wife how to climb into her husbands skin and become one with him. She effectively wears him like a body suit which molds to her form. The two continue to live out their days in the country home where all this takes place.

Conclusion

If you read the spoiler section then you might think that this book is a little over the top and maybe kind of stupid sounding, but its really not. Its strange for sure, but it was well written and the story progresses in a way that makes sense to the reader. I found it novel and entertaining and would recommend it if it sounds appealing to you. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Enjoy and thanks for reading. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Oh man, that back-cover description,“uniquely unsettling Gothic love story”. The way the parasite just… blooms out of a guy’s back feels less like horror and more like a fever dream you can’t stop staring at. And the twist with the wife becoming part of him? Brilliant. Would’ve been creeped out if it didn’t all feel so weirdly poetic. Now I’m curious if the flower-parasite is a metaphor or if Ruthnum just loves grotesque beauty.

Im not sure if it was a metaphor for something or just a cool idea. I didn't analyze it too deeply myself and didn't research what others were saying about it. Id be interested though, if there was deeper meaning.

Wow, that's some messed up stuff! Doesn't seem like something that would naturally appeal to me, but I am not opposed to pushing my comfort zone either. 85 pages is something I could probably handle. Too bad I have a stack of books I need to work through first. My wife and I just keep buying them faster than I can read them!

Yeah I hear you. The stack just keeps growing. At one point my wife and I put a limit on how many new books we were "allowed" to buy before finishing the books that were in backlog. It was sort of like a "one in and one out" policy once we exceeded our limit lol. We based it on how fast and how many books each of us read so she was "allowed" to have 11 in backlog and me 4. I think we essentially did away with that rule though. I think I only have 2 in backlog at the moment but not sure what she has now.

I keep finding stuff to buy for my Kindle and then this weekend alone we visited three used book stores. I've been reading a lot of Michael Connely and he has quite a catalog of books, so I am slowly working through all of those. Right now I am about three into the Bosch series, but I also just started picking up the Lincoln Lawyer books.

That should keep you busy for a while

You actually read it! I think you made a comment on my reading of it last year if I remember correctly. Glad you could find the time to read it. Your descriptions is good, and I agree 100% with you: the writing is what makes it good. I don't know about you, but to me the writing was some of the best I had come across in a while. I enjoyed the reading process, so the shocking turn of events at the end almost came naturally. Or, because of the good writing, I had to re-read what I read just to make sure I was not reading it wrong!

Thats funny. Tbh I don't remember your post or my comment but now I'm curious. I had a screen shot of the cover of the book in my photos for the longest time and I forgot how it was recommended to me. I wonder if its from your post 🤔

I had to re-read what I read just to make sure I was not reading it wrong!

Thats funny. I did the exact same thing! Lol. I was like "whoa.wait. what?" And then I went back and re-read the previous few pages again. Lol
