The construction near Golden, British Columbia is on schedule, and the 24-hour road closures are halfway over.

Originally starting April 14th and slated to last until May 15h, the land did not present any unexpected engineering challenges for the engineers. This is good news for logistics companies and people who are using this mountain pass for essential travel. There have been strict warnings put in place until May 25th by the Government of British Columbia.

Travel restrictions for non-essential travel in B.C. are in place until May 25. Fines can be given to people who leave their region for non-essential travel. - government of BC

These uncertain times onset from the last covid-19 lockdowns, unpopular amongst many Canadians, presented the province of British Columbia with a great opportunity to close the highway with minimal logistical impact due to lockdowns hampering most forms of domestic tourism.

The commercial vehicles have been using a 1.5-hour detour via Radium Hot Springs on Highways 93S & 95. If you're traveling on this route, please make sure to give yourself at least 1.5 hours extra time if traveling west from Alberta to British Columbia.

Please note that road closures due to Kicking Horse Canyon Project construction apply only to the 4.8-kilometer construction zone in the canyon itself. The Trans-Canada Highway from Castle Junction to Lake Louise, Field, and Beaverfoot will be open even during extended closures.

The current 24/7 Highway 1 closure will continue until Friday, May 14, followed by overnight closures on the weekend of May 14 to 16.

The 24-hour extended closures return on May 17 but are restricted to weekdays only.

The highway is open without stoppages from 12:00 noon May 21 through 12:00 noon MDT on May 25.

From June 1, continuing until mid-September, daytime stoppages will cease except for momentary interruptions to allow construction vehicles to cross the highway.
