My new scale in action with another Italian barista champion coffee.

Well, it’s been a while since I had this dream of buying a dedicated coffee scale, but till now this wasn’t very economical for me. These specialty scales can cost up to $100 and a normal kitchen scale, that costs about $10, would deal with the job good enough.

But last week the coffee geek woke up inside me and I went straight to the specialty cafe in the town as soon as I understood that the owner has delivered a Hario coffee scale. I just knew that this was gonna be mine even before visiting the place.

And so… this is the Hario V60 Drip Scale Wide. I guess it is named “wide” because it can handle even bigger jugs for the V60 setup. Of course it does an excellent job with measuring coffee beans for espresso. The weight is always important and a precision of 1 gram, which the ordinary kitchen scales have, is not enough at all.

This model is not the traditional Hario V60 model and after I searched the web for reviews, it seemd that there are almost no photos. I think the model is produced for certain markets like India and other Asian countries. Its design is better in my opinion and when the screen goes on, the digits illuminate quite cool.

And well, the main feature that boosts the price of these scales even more is the ability to measure the brewing time. So, no need for using my phone stopwatch when brewing coffee. 2 in 1 is better and neater and it makes the process of brewing coffee simpler.

The scale works with 3 x AAA batteries, while other have a built in rechargeable battery. The latter seems to have a little bit higher price. I bought this Hario for about $60 which was a real deal!

Now it is time for the coffee itself.

The PEACOCKS Coffee Roaster is an Italian brand found by two brothers back in 2018. One of them became the Italian Barista Champion 4 years later. The roasters have a wife variety of coffee related awards in their portfolio, so this coffee should be great.

The Ethiopia Bililka Ipso Coop is a cooperational coffee from the heart of Africa, meaning that a lot of farmers gathered and tried to achieve perfection of their green coffee. Cooperations are a common coffee growing practice in the country so you will almost never meet a single farmer Ethiopian product.

An interesting touch is the little woodden pinch on the top of the bag. It has a dual purpose. First of all it holds the additional paper label that delivers an information about this coffee. And secondly, it is used to “seal” the bag after opening it, because they dont have a resealable zipper strip.

Measuring exactly 15.0 grams of coffee has never been simpler.

After grinding I can check if the scale holds some ground beans. Coffee retention is a common problem of the cheaper grinders and these are usually thr motorized automatic grinder. Mine seems to do the job excellently.

15 grams in, 15 grams out. The retention is usually 0.1-0.2 grams and a normal kitchen scale would never measure that.

Now it’s time for action. The roast profile of this coffee is filter, so it should shine on the V60.

This morning is quite busy. My wife in on a yoga class again, all the kids are awake and want their food. I will have to enjoy the warm cup of coffee while cooking the usual oat flakes with white cheese for the boys.

The Ethiopia Bikilka Ipso Coop has a pretty light and delightful taste. The gentle tea notes blend with some citrus freshness. The body is not very thick, making this coffee a great and easy drinker. You can enjoy that all day long.

And now it is time to continue with my busy father’s Saturday. See you soon and hope you to have a great weekend.

Bye!
