My Grandma's Coffee

A few days ago I discovered that the way I am used to drinking coffee with milk is not as common as I thought and that maybe adding a pinch of salt is not very "normal".

Coffee with milk is one of my favorite ways of drinking coffee and perhaps it is because when we were little it was the only way we were allowed to drink it, and generally this happened when we were on vacation at Grandma Rosa's house, because in my house coffee was not consumed in any of its presentations.

So probably my taste for coffee with milk above any other, has been determined by my childhood, specifically by my grandmother's coffee to which I always found a distinctive touch with respect to that of others, but for a long time I was incapable of determining what it was that gave it such a characteristic flavor that was precisely what I liked.

In fact, until today, nowhere have I enjoyed coffee with milk with the touch that my grandmother's had, and a few years ago I discovered that grandmother Rosa added a pinch of salt once the coffee with milk was ready, for this reason it has been very difficult for me to taste one like hers again, except in my own home.

And this has been a product of asking and asking among my relatives, especially among my uncles and aunts, since my mother did not know clearly what it could be. In fact she assumed that its special flavor was due to the fact that grandma used pure cow's milk, but some time ago I discarded that possibility, so there must have been something else that grandma did differently and right now I don't remember which of my uncles told me.... "Mom used to put salt on it".

And yes, a pinch of salt was what gave it that particular flavor that I love and of course, from that moment on, once my coffee with milk is ready, the little touch of salt can never be missing and although it is not identical to my grandmother's, it is quite similar.

And what I thought was something "normal ", one day while talking with friends I realized that it is not so much, because in a conversation the subject came up and everyone was surprised by the presence of salt in the coffee with milk, and what for me was something so normal, for many has a touch of madness. In fact, they are reluctant to try it.

But for those of us who know a little bit about cooking, or have seen a program on TV, a touch of salt in desserts helps to reinforce their flavor, so my grandmother Rosa's coffee with milk is not as crazy as it seems.

Could it be that my grandmother was a pioneer in the use of salted latte or are there others out there who consume it that way? I would love to read your opinions on this matter and to know if you have consumed it in this way. And at this point I want to clarify that it is not about adding a lot of salt and even less about dispensing with sugar, but to give it an extra touch with a pinch of salt.

For me it is absolutely delicious that way and although it does not look the same to me, it takes me back to my childhood, to those days when my cousins and I would sit at the table with a cup of coffee with milk, soda cracker and spoon in hand. And it tasted like the glory of that soda cracker crushed in the coffee that we ate every morning amidst the noise of grandma's roosters and hens.

So if you haven't tried it I invite you to do so, because with just a pinch of salt your perspective will change and you will probably not want to drink it any other way and if not, nothing happened, at least you experienced something new and that's what life is all about!

Have a great day. Kisses and blessings!

Muchas gracias amigo

I am totally impressed, I had never heard of this, but at the same time it has generated an immense curiosity in me, I have to try it, the grandmothers have always had those secrets that gave that unique and special touch to what they prepared, thanks for sharing.

You know I thought everyone used it and I was surprised when no one in the group had tried it like this!
Here at home it will roll from generation to generation hehe because my children love it that way and the oldest already prepares it that way.
My grandmother drinks hers without milk, very dark and with a little bit of rum! That one with milk was for the grandchildren!

A big hug!

My family drinks isotonic seawater, which is 1 part of seawater diluted in 3 parts of plain water. We drink it instead of regular plain water, to get all the minerals contained in seawater. Anyhow, a few years ago my mother in law prepared coffee for a birthday party using our isotonic seawater. No complains, just a surprise for coffee drinkers. We finished the whole pot of coffee. And we continue to remember that day when grandma switched the waters 🙃

You know it's the first time I've heard of this type of water and I have the beach nearby!
That change of water of the mother-in-law was close to my ideal coffee hehe, a little milk and make another jug!

I used to have milk with my coffee, but I went black many years ago, and I have not gone back!
I've never tried salt in my coffee, that's an interesting combination.O F F E E-3.jpg

I like black coffee, but only once in a while. Coffee with milk is my perdition hahaha.
If one day you feel adventurous try adding a pinch of salt to your usual latte!

Thanks for stopping by Milly

Muchas gracias

I love it, when you told me to add salt to the coffee I thought you were half crazy, but when I tried it I loved it it is delicious, now I do not prepare it in any other way.

Thanks for this tip sis 🤗❤️

Hehe you saw! Didn't it remind you of my grandmother's coffee? I thought a lot of people did that, but I see it was grandma's thing.
Here everyone already puts a pinch of salt in it, even Matías who already makes coffee hehehe
Hugs manita

Yes, it is very tasty, the bad thing is that without sugar it does not taste very good, so I am not putting anything anymore, only milk 😅

I thought everyone knew that coffee with milk also had a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor 🤣 but they call me crazy when I tell them that. Or that coffee and liqueur enhances the flavor of chocolate cake.
