The image has been an entire industry since the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, where it began to show the successful paths it would take from then on. Without a doubt, this has been the case, not only for cinematography or the visual arts, but for everything. From a communication perspective, marketing has used the image as a primary tool for commercial purposes, so much so that, today, what is not capable of reaching the largest number of possible viewers perishes in its own market.
La imagen es toda una industria desde fines del siglo XVIII e inicios del XIX, donde comenzó a mostrar los derroteros exitosos que tendría a partir de entonces. Sin dudas, así ha sido, no solo para la cinematografía o las artes visuales, sino para todo. Desde lo comunicacional, el marketing ha utilizado la imagen como herramienta primaria con fin comercial, tanto así que, a día de hoy, aquello que no es capaz de llegar a la mayor cantidad de expectadores posibles perece en su propio mercado.
The arts, obviously, are high consumers of this graphic tool in the broadest spectrum of their "doing", for literature it has been no less. The ways that are used in our daily lives to promote authors, works, interviews, editorials, newspapers, commercial phenomena around writing, etc. They are innumerable, therefore, we authors must be aware that, if we intend to live, or at least achieve things through our writing, beyond the romanticism of writing for ourselves (which I consider a fallacy) or writing above anything else. Regardless of whether it comes to good cause, success or not, taking care of our image and making it an efficient mechanism to transmit according to our work aesthetics is a powerful weapon.
Las artes, obviamente, son altas consumidoras de esta herramienta gráfica en el más amplio espectro de su "hacer", para la literatura no ha sido menos. Los modos que se utilizan en nuestra cotidianidad para promocionar autores, obras, entrevistas, editoriales, periódico, fenómenos comerciales en torno a la escritura, etc. son innumerables, por ello, los autores debemos concientizar que, si pretendemos vivir, o al menos lograr cosas a través de nuestra escritura, más allá del romanticismo de escribir para nosotros mismos (lo cual considero una falacia) o escribir por encima de cualquier cosa independientemente de si llega a buen cause, al éxito o no, cuidar nuestra imagen y hacer de ella un mecanismo eficiente para transmitir acorde a nuestras estéticas de trabajo, es un arma poderosa.
From time to time I hire the service of professional photographers in my city with the intention of obtaining quality images to work with. I am a writer, and I always need to have good photographs at hand for when I am asked for interviews, for the back covers of my books or for joint promotional campaigns with publishers.
Cada cierto tiempo contrato el servicio de fotógrafos profesionales en mi ciudad con la intención de obtener imágenes de calidad con las cuales trabajar. Soy escritora, y necesito siempre tener a manos buenas fotografías para cuando me soliciten entrevistas, para las contraportadas de mis libros o para campañas promocionales de conjunto con las editoriales.
Some authors have been friends, others have not, but the idea is always to be able to somehow also enhance their work, not only with the photographs they take of me or my books, but also by using photos to graphic some video-books that I have fact, or trailers-books. I contact them, I explain the idea I have about what the text or texts that I want to promote are about and together we select the images that best associate with the theme, in this way we are both promoting our work. On occasions I have wanted ownership of one or another photograph and after agreeing on prices I have then had the rights to be able to use them whenever I need, or to have them appear on the covers of my books, for example.
Algunos autores han sido amigos, otros no, pero, la idea siempre es poder de algún modo también realzar sus trabajos, no solo con las fotografías que me toman a mí o a mis libros, si no usando fotos para graficar algunos video-libros que he hecho, o trailers-libros. Los contacto, les expongo la idea que tengo, acerca de qué va el texto o los textos que quiero promocionar y de conjunto seleccionamos las imágenes que mejor se asocien a la temática, de ese modo ambos estamos promocionando nuestra obra. En ocasiones he querido la propiedad sobre alguna que otra fotografía y tras convenir precios entonces he tenido los derechos para poder usarlas siempre que lo necesite, o para que figuren en las portadas de mis libros, por ejemplo.
These photographs that I have been sharing with you today were part of a section of work with the Santiago photographer Marvin Rodríguez Torres, who for a time was also a specialist at the Africa House in our city and his work involved, in fact I still believe that it continues working the same line of Africanity in clothing practices, in textile decorations and ornamentation of spaces, etc.
Estas fotografías que hoy he estado compartiendo con ustedes formaron parte de una sección de trabajo con el fotógrafo santiaguero Marvin Rodríguez Torres, quien durante un tiempo fue además especialista de la Casa de África en nuestra ciudad y su trabajo versó, de hecho todavía creo que sigue trabajando la misma línea de la africanidad en las prácticas de vestimenta, en los adornos textiles y ornamentación de espacios etc.
We looked for a neutral place, that would not have influence on the discourse of the photograph, if perhaps one or two photos could dialogue with the environment, in the rest only the face and the costumes do their thing. The photographic set was his apartment. My friend lived in a peripheral area of the city, where the countryside was already lurking, but, nevertheless, we did not want that to intervene in the context. After that first section, came the stage of selecting which ones we would keep. Finally he decided to work some in color and another selection in black and white. I must confess that I liked the contrasts in the chiaroscuros of the black and white images much more.
Buscamos un lugar neutro, que no tuviese influencia en el discurso de la fotografía, si acaso una o dos fotos pudieran dialogar con el entorno, en el resto solo el rostro y el vestuario hacen lo suyo. El Set fotográfico fue su apartamento. Mi amigo vivía en una zona periférica de la ciudad, donde lo campestre ya acechaba, pero, sin embargo, no quisimos que eso interviniese en el contexto. Luego de esa primera sección, vino la etapa de seleccionar con cuáles nos quedaríamos. Finalmente decidió trabajar algunas a color y otra selección en blanco y negro. Debo confesar que me gustaron mucho más los contrastes en los claroscuros de las imágenes a blanco y negro.
I was really very pleased with this photographic section. I will use them as an author image in some of the interviews that are requested of me, for the cover of a book, or even for profile photos on social networks. Well, I think the nature reflected in the images captured me very well. There is a mixture of seriousness and invitation that I find interesting as a communication strategy. Quedé realmente muy complacida con esta sección fotográfica. Las usaré para imagen de autor en algunas de las entrevistas que me soliciten, para la portada de algún libro, o incluso, para fotos de perfil en redes sociales.
