New Year, New Sun!!!

Omo… it seems like while some of us are trying to take this year one step at a time, trying to ease ourselves back into the routine of hustle and money-making, the weather is not looking to take things any easy with us. Like the year is barely a few days old and it’s already hitting us with harsh sunlight as if humanity has already offended it.

Oh yeah, it’s barely past 10 in the morning and the sun here in Lagos is terrible! It’s too hot and I honestly don’t know how people who go out into it daily cope. I had a plan to go to the supermarket this morning, but the minute I felt the harsh sunlight on my skin, I changed my mind at once.

Yesterday, I didn’t have a choice. I had to make an extremely important trip and it meant I had to do it in the sun. And boy did I see shege! Unfortunately, this wasn’t one of those situations where I could easily get on a bus or take a bike to my destination. No, all the trips I was making were within a limited location and as such, I didn’t need to take any vehicle. However, I did have to walk under the sun!

It wasn’t easy at all. Having to struggle with people, fighting the sweltering heat, and mopping my face up every few minutes due to the sweat that kept accumulating on it. That was just how bad it was. At a time, it was as if my temperature had been increased simply because I was spending an extended period of time in the sun.

But then, sometime during my trip, I had to get into the bank. That was the first breath of fresh air that I took that day, The cool air was in stark contrast to the oven that was cooking myself and other Lagosians outside. I had to spend the first few minutes of my time in the bank close to an air conditioning unit, just to let my body get the cool air.

So, I did my business in the bank, and I had to get back into the sunlight. For some reason though, this time around it was worse than before. My body had already adjusted to the cool temperature of the bank and when I stepped back into the sunlight, the sudden shift in temperature was staggering. It was as if a dozen needles were pinching me all at the same time. However, I continued on my journey, I knew that I didn’t have much else to do and I would eventually get home soon enough.

Well, I did everything I stepped out to do, and it was with great appreciation that I returned home after hours in the sun. I’m sure many of you know this, but there’s a way the sun would beat you ehn, it would be as if it’s sucking all the blood and water right from your body. Many people faint simply because they’ve been in the sun for too long.

The last time I was in the sun for that long was when I was in school, walking around from class to class. I left that life behind, and now if I don’t have to be in the sun, you can bet that I wouldn’t be found in the sun. Most of my outings now are in the evenings, when the weather is considerably cooler.

And that was the decision I made today. When I saw just how hot the sun was this morning, I immediately changed my mind about going to the supermarket. It would happen later in the evening. At that time, I might even be able to throw in a night stroll as well.

Well, all in all, it’s a good day!
