Achieving More With Less Cars On The Road.

Transportation plays a vital role in today's society for every individual, whether young or old, and its importance can't be quantified. It's one component that connects us to different parts of our city, state, country, and even the world as a whole, so it's crucial to our everyday life.

Without the different means of transportation technology has blessed us with, moving around would have been very complicated, especially with our current population. I wasn't born in the era when people moved about with animals, but I can tell that it was quite challenging, and I sometimes wonder how it will make those people who lived in those years feel when they know that transportation has been made a lot easier.

Beyond helping us move around easily, transportation has paved the way for development in different parts of the world and improved safety and relationships between people from different backgrounds/cultures.

Sadly, these upgrades in the transportation system come at the detriment of humans and our ecosystem. Some years ago, I remembered how the demolition of houses because of a road expansion caused the untimely death of a few people in a part of Lagos, and I always feel like they could still be here if there wasn't a need for the expansion, but there is nothing we can do because development is crucial in a world where our population is increasing drastically.

Our environment has been tampered with while constructing facilities for transportation, and it would interest you to know humans aren't the only ones affected. Animals have lost their habitats all in the name of these upgrades, and that's quite disheartening.

Let's not forget the emission of toxic gas from our engines that has caused us to experience climate change over the years, or should we dive deep into how our vehicles and other things we use for transportation are built? The ecosystem takes the hit, and yet, there is little we can do about these things because we can't return to the old ways of transportation.

Going backwards with transportation technology isn't an option, but I believe we can make a huge difference for the sake of the ecosystem. The one family per vehicle idea might seem terrible to the wealthy ones in the society who have sophisticated engines in their garage, but I think that could be the way forward for us. It's definitely not going to be easy since a lot of people would find it difficult to cope, but it's very possible if we are keen on restoring balance to our ecosystem.

If this idea becomes a rule, families that are used to having more than one car will definitely struggle, but it's not the end of the world because there are decent public buses that can easily help us move around as we wish. I always tell my family that even though I have a car, I will move about more in public transportation, and the car will serve mainly for the family as a whole—probably for church or other events.

I find it stressful sitting at the wheel, especially on Lagos roads, where you can be stuck in traffic for hours. Plus, those public buses aren't as expensive as putting your car on the road; it even gets worse when the vehicle develops unexpected faults in the middle of nowhere.

The comfort level is definitely different, but that has never been an issue, especially with the BRT we have here in Lagos. Before any government across the world can make this a law, they will need to provide an accessible, safe, and comfortable means of transportation; it must be really good for people to embrace it instead of one family having several cars on the road daily.

I actually do not find anything wrong with one family having just one car to themselves. The family movement can be managed properly, and they won't even miss their other vehicles.

You've spoken well, this ideal will greatly improve the quality of life, because there'll be less carbon emitted to our atmosphere and less chance of accidents and traffic jam.

It's a really good one but difficult to implement because of people's mentality. Sometimes I wonder why someone needs like 4 cars packed in the garage doing nothing.

I believe people buy cars to flaunt wealth more than the need to drive around.

You have said it all sir, this rule will help improve nature as it will serve us better.

Definitely, it will help nature a lot but this would be tough to implement because we have to start from the government officials who have 10 convoys and 10 cars parked in their garage.

One family one car rule can only stand if the government make available many brt vehicles to cover all areas...a state with too many population will continue to suffer from carbon emissions and all manner of gases release in the air from bad car exhaust

That's one of the beauty of public transport, you can easily choose to get off and walk when the traffic becomes unbearable. However, you can't try that with a private car. You'd sit there and wait until the road clears up. And then, it's too much of cars in circulation that causes the traffic ooo😤
