Tipping system turned into a bad culture

in Hive Learnersyesterday

Tipping culture is very common in recent days. The culture started long ago, but the mentality of humans has changed a lot in this case.

In earlier times, naturally rich people used to tip others when they were satisfied with their service. It was like an unexpected gift for those who received tips. But at the current time, tipping culture has become so frequent that those people taking a tip are guaranteed. Expecting tips is not a bad thing, but if it becomes a reason to treat people differently, it's not good. Sometimes, because of the tipping system, humans can be humiliated also. Let me share some common incidents related to it.

Let's start with the restaurant issues. If you tip the waiter, they will provide you with the best service, and they will try to satisfy you with their polite behavior. It's not a problem, but if you don't tip the waiter, the problem will start. They don't say anything directly to the customers, but their behavior says everything. They provide services because they are bound to do so. Their actions give you a feeling like you are a criminal. In any wedding ceremony, waiters sometimes cross their limit also. They ask for money from the groom as tips, and I don't see anything wrong with that, but when the groom tips them money as their expectations, they don't want to let it go easily and don't want to leave the groom easily. I can understand their intention, but sometimes they become physical, and the past is very humiliating for a groom in a wedding ceremony. The same thing was almost about to happen at one of my cousin's weddings, but in the middle, I took charge, and I didn't pay the tip; that was decided because I thought they didn't deserve it as they behaved badly with the groom. I became a bad person in their eyes, but I don't care about it. At the end, they need to leave without any tips with a sad face. I didn't have the intention of not giving a tip, but I feel the lesson was also necessary for them. I just reminded them it can't be taken as guaranteed, and they should behave within their limit.

Let's talk about the case of a hospital. I think it's the worst case there. In government hospitals, nurses and ward boys, both categories of people, eagerly wait for tips from each patient. The behaviors of ward boys became friendly if they receive tip and try to help, and if not, they try to avoid giving a helping hand when necessary. Nurses are the worst ones in this case. Those nurses feel they are the owners of the hospital and everything will happen according to their rules. Those nurses are naturally not so friendly to patients, and they try to behave normally when they receive tips, but if they don't get it, patients receive rude behavior from nurses. They treat patients so rudely, and it's not good for a patient. I have seen quarreling with patients many times, and I think nobody went to the hospital for quarreling. I am really disappointed in it, and the thing makes a huge impact on patient's minds, and sometimes I want to slap those nurses, but I am helpless also because who knows if they do something wrong with patients? There are many past histories related to it. I just feel hospital tips should be banned, and if anyone receives tips, they should be eliminated from the profession. I know I may sound harsh, but I am irritated to see such a kind of thing happening again and again.

In the time of withdrawing money from an ATM booth, many guards ask for money. One or two times is ok, but keeping asking for money each time is troublesome. I think a tip should be given when one is pleased by the service, and it naturally comes from a generous heart. But now the tipping system is in the worst condition, and it has turned into a bribing system, and I don't like it. So, I feel it's better to stop the tipping system.

I absolutely agree with the above statement. Some people see tipping as a compulsory thing to be done to them. It's bad.

That's the worst thing and that creates discrimination.

I can relate to this hospital experience with tipping..my God! Both the nurses and the security men almost made life unbearable for me during my last birthing...it was like it's a must I should tip them even when I had financial load on my head, imagine
These people becoming to feel entitled and their bad services always unfold whenever I refuse to tip them
Tipping indeed is an unexpected gift...I hope people will know better and reduce their expectations

I think tipping in hospital is the worst thing that can happen and it needs a full stop right now considering the overall situation. They treat patients unfairly and it's not good.

It's saddening that the tipping system in your place has turned bad. To me, tipping is voluntary and a good way of showing appreciation for someone doing a great job.

I also think that it's a way to show appreciation but I think it already came to worse situation. So, it's better not to continue the system.
