This is a publication based on the suggested topic proposed in the Hive Learners community through their discord, which on this occasion is "Recycling Practices".

Hello dear readers and loyal visitors of my blog.

Today I’m going to talk to you about recycling practices, and it’s really interesting how we can make the most of things that have already been used, because this, among other things, brings an economic benefit: we save a good amount of money by giving a second life to items or things we’ve already used.

One of the interesting things about this is, for example, recycling paper we’ve already used.

We all have some notebook or notepad where we’ve drawn or written something.

Even though cell phones are more commonly used nowadays, there are still people who draw or buy newspapers, and these materials can be used in different ways.

In the case of notebooks, the paper can be recycled: you gather all the paper, right, and this is something I learned many years ago in school when I was a child.

We used to make our own recycled paper by wetting all the sheets, right, and mixing them with water to create a paper pulp from all the pages of our notebook, from the drawings we’d made.

We’d filter those sheets through a mesh screen, like the ones used for sifting cement or sand.

Well, a screen that was sold back then in stationery stores, and there we’d place this paper pulp. Of course, we’d let it dry for a day, and the next day we’d have a little sheet of recycled paper.

Of course, the little sheet had stains from the ink and colors we’d used, and to avoid this, we’d simply, well, wash the paper pulp until it released as much color as possible, so it wouldn’t bleed and the material would be as white as possible, allowing us to have a blank sheet to write on.

The interesting thing is that with this, we could use these paper sheets and recycle them.

Moving on to answer the first questions proposed in this initiative, the first one is: how often do I recycle? Well, I can tell you that at home I do it very often, because due to water problems, the water scarcity where I live, I have to collect water all the time to have water for my toilet and to wash my kitchen utensils and dishes when I use them.

So, I usually reuse soda bottles, soft drink bottles, and once I finish the drink, I keep the plastic container to store water in it.

All those containers help me store water, so I always have them there.

The last time I recycled these items was just yesterday, because I have these bottles where I store water.

Here in Venezuela, we have a system that is being implemented in each community, depending on the needs of each community, but generally there are special containers where different items to be recycled are placed, whether plastics, glass, or other non-recyclable items, and there they’re categorized.

Then the waste collection service comes and takes them to collection centers, where they’re actually processed.

I can say I rarely use this recycling system because I try, as much as possible, to use things that are biodegradable and don’t harm the environment, because I’m aware that currently the problem we have in the world is that renewable resources are running out—they’re not being renewed due to the high levels of pollution and precisely because we don’t recycle.

With the different items I have here at home, for example, a bathtub someone threw away (a baby bathtub), I repurposed and recycled it into a planter, and now I have my aloe vera and mint plants in that baby bathtub.

So, that’s how it is: I recycle different kinds of items.

Sometimes, I also use vehicle tires to plant flowers, to grow different types of petunias and aloe vera. So, in the lower part of the building, we use these tires as planters.

This way, we help the environment and recycle these items.

I think it’s very important and interesting for people around the world to recycle items, especially because the global population keeps growing, we’re polluting the planet more, and we have a scarcity of resources.

So, on one hand, there’s a great need for us to recycle things to save money, and also to help with the cleanliness and sanitation of the planet, which it so desperately needs.

Hi @manclar, I loved your approach to this topic. Over here, in Europe when we think about recycling we don't take into account the reuse of objects, but to deposit them in the right bin. If it's paper in the green bin, if it's plastic in the yellow bin, and so on. And then we don't worry about what happens to what is left in those garbage cans.

It seems to me a greater commitment to the Planet the proposal you make to reuse objects. Besides, it is the only way to know that the used objects are really recycled.

A big hug.
