Data privacy is a crucial subject for anyone who knows how bad things can get for them with their data in the wrong hands, and safeguarding our data has become more complicated with the use of the internet since we all want to have a lot of information online.

Back in the good old days, when there were more physical interactions, our government crossed many horses before they could know information about us, unlike now, where humans are digitally connected with devices, making our online interactions impossible to keep a secret anymore. Nowadays, the government and other bodies monitor our conversations, and while it shouldn't affect us, they cross the boundary sometimes and could use it negatively for their own selfish interests. Not withstanding, there are still advantages and disadvantages to having our data out there, and I would love to share my opinion with you below.

Advantages

In case of emergency, your data can easily be accessed and necessary decisions taken:

Let's say you have an ID card that has a chip. That chip is like an ATM card, and if something happens, they will use the chip to access your name, where you come from and other information, in a case they want to transfuse the person, maybe the person cannot even talk and is unconscious, they can find out your details via bio data and can actually relate to your next of kin. All that information that is now out there for the public to access becomes an advantage to you and can save your life.

Your data can help exonerate you from crime-related offenses:

In a case where a crime was committed and you are being accused of it, sometimes your data can help you. For instance, if someone says that you killed somebody and then there's evidence of DNA there, if you have your finger print or DNA as a record in your public data,it can be used to cross-match, and the result may set you free from a crime you knew nothing about.

Disadvantages

Impersonation: The same way your data can exonerate you from crime, somebody can harvest your data and use it to impersonate you as if you are the one doing a crime. This can be possible because our data is easily accessible, and this is one downside of not having our data private. One can use our data to create something you cannot even deny.

It exposes you to danger: There have been cases whereby somebody hacked into people's accounts and had full access to their data. Let's say on Facebook, for example, somebody can trace you and know where you stay. Kidnapping can happen because your data is out there, and this puts someone in danger.

Is there a way to make sure the data is really private?

I think the implementation of a data protection policy looks like a good solution to this subject. If this is implemented, what it means is that no one has access to our data. Even on social media, where we put our name and other things, the people who regulate social media will make sure that nobody accesses our data, but then this policy is not implemented.

Sometimes you see that people's accounts are being hacked, and the hacker will start posting nude pictures and other information, trying to send messages to your contacts that you are in trouble and in need of money. This act is very common in our digital world today, where our data is scattered all over the Internet. This is possible because our data is not well protected; however, having multiple layers of protection can help combat this issue to some extent.

Nowadays, there are so many apps out there that actually help us perform our activities, and many times, we supply our data to these apps. However, not allowing all websites and apps that seek our consent to access our private data and share it with other apps is another solution to the data privacy issues.

This is my response to the #hivelearners community contest about Data and privacy.

I can just imagine how being impersonated will be like
You can’t even defend yourself because it’s truly your data that has been used
And nobody will even believe you

Exactly 💯
My husband was once impersonated using his name and his position in his company..it was a total terrible experience before the truth was uncovered
I don't want to imagine data impersonation..it will be worse
Lol

Oh that’s sad, I’m glad the truth was uncovered

Haaaa! How can you even deny what they've used your data to create? Even you self, you go explain tire, no evidence 😅
The way the world is going, we really need a data protection policy even on our social media handles.

Haha 😆😂
No escape route my dear...no evidence..they will have so much evidence before you..
I wish data protection policy can be possible someday

Every time technology advances, issues of privacy and security arise. I think this data protection policy could actually help. But knowing us Africans, we probably wouldn’t read the policy through before accepting.

The issue of apps collecting our data is one of the main reasons I am advocate of web3. Web2 platforms are normally the ones trying to get a hold of your data and monetizing it. The likes of Facebook, TikTok and Twitter.

Of course, we won't even read, especially when it's a lengthy information, haha..many times, we accept to our own detriment

Yea..web3 apps is always safer when it comes to this policy stuff

Technology is advancing everyday, and it's so scary to think that someone can impersonate you, or use your data for selfish reasons.

My dear, scary is an understatement
If you have experienced personification, then you will know that it's something so terrible to behold
I'm hoping we don't experience such

I hope so too,

The issue of impersonation this days is really serious. Imagine picking up your phone to see a text from your husband asking for an amount of money stating it was urgent.

Most at times it’s not even your husband but his phone his been compromised without his knowledge. It’s really scary out there these days.

I am telling you
Hackers taking advantage of the technology to keep messing up
Only if data protection policy is implemented, they may not have access to our data

That’s very true. Most governments are benefiting from this so it’s difficult to implement such a policy.

Honestly, the disadvantages of having our data out there far outweighs whatever advantage we may gain from it.

People have been tracked and killed before because there exposed data was used to monitor their activities.

It's disheartening indeed
Unfortunately we can totally control it

Hacking into someone's social media account could be damaging. A colleague once chatted me on Whatsapp that she was finding it difficult to make a transfer. She begged me to transfer 75k to someone. According to her, she would send it back to me when her network improves. My only saving grace was to put a call across to the same number. I found out that the WhatsApp had been hacked. Those people are terrible.
Data protection is very important and I love the way you did the analysis.

Wooot 🤭🫢🫢
I had same issue but my mistake was that I didn't call my friend to confirm

I just sent the money and the hacker vanished
You are very smart with your actions light

I think another way to not experience the disadvantages you mention is to reduce the amount of personal informations we provide online, many people are careless about what they feed thwir audience online.

Some websites also promise that our data are free from any third parties but they lie. Once you search for a thing through these websites, the following day you are already seeing what you serched for as ads in other websites and even social media apps.

I believe that data should remain private but at the same time we can't ignore the importance of data specially considering the security. Unfortunately our data is stealing continuously which is a matter of concern.
