Would it be a good idea to scrap homework given to students completely? Well , I was once a student and am currently a parent who is actively involved in her kid's academic journey, so I find this topic quite relatable and interesting. I will tell you that there are one thousand and one reasons why homework given to students is very important, but hold on, there are some concerns based on my experience so far..
To start with, school schedules are very demanding. First, the students have to wake up as early as 5 am or thereabouts to get ready for school and then spend 9 hours in the school, for my kids anyways; I don't know about others. Coming home late, they still have loads of homework from different teachers to face at home. To be sincere, this can be frustrating at times on the part of the students, and sometimes, I understand their grudges whenever homework is mentioned. They want to experience other activities at home aside from learning. They want to play at the field, engage in their hobbies, and bond more with their families, and even engage in other skills that are not book-related, but here is the catch...
How about schools looking closely into the gravity of homework given to these learners on a daily basis? How about giving them this homework in moderation? That way, they will be able to quickly attend to their homework and have time to engage in other of their favorite activities. Life is all about balance; it's much sweeter and more enjoyable that way. I have heard several times that "everything should have a limit", but it seems that most schools of this era haven't come across that statement.
Last night, my son was writing homework from the time he returned from school and refreshed until 10:36pm before he went to bed. The boy was obviously exhausted and mentally drained! My little baby of 3 years came home too with a mountain of homework, and I know no rest as a parent, guiding, getting involved, and making sure that they are doing the right thing, coupled with other chores I needed to attend to; it's not a joke! School just resumed, and some teachers have started showing themselves. The PTA I attended last term ended almost in a riot. Parents were agitating over the too much homework given to these learners and pleaded for adjustment so that students wouldn't experience so much burnout and also have enough time to rest and get ready for the next day's school activities; yet, the issue of too much homework is still currently active over here.
I understand that some of these students wouldn't study their books if you failed to engage them in homework. Homework is the only avenue you can use to indirectly force some students to study their books; if not, passing their exams will be a struggle. There are some of these students whose parents aren't always available to ensure they are studying; in their case, homework should motivate them to do the needful. Also, students tend to forget easily if they are not engaged with homework after school. In the part of parents, I love to know what my kids are learning in school through their homework and be involved to guide and correct them. Sometimes, my kids don't get it right during the lesson session in school due to one reason or the other, but when I explain it better to them at home, it becomes clearer—it's a win-win.
While I will advocate for homework given to learners to continue and never be scrapped due to how important it is in their learning journey, it is important that schools/teachers should observe moderation. Let there be a balanced structure where both parents and students will still attend to the homework for more quality learning and still have time to do other things.

He did homework until 10:30? Where is the time to play???😂😂
This is too much ooo. I see teachers who bombard their pupils with excess homework as lazy. I've seen firsthand how many of them will rather give pupils homework on topics they're yet to teach just so that they don't have to teach it themselves. Then, it'll be up to the students to learn it themselves.
As far as I'm concerned, any homework that can't be concluded with 1-2 hours, is something else. Because they're still kids. They still have to play, they still have to spend time with their family and watch cartoon in the night before going to bed.
This is also as important as doing homework!
Hahaha 😂😂...that's not only the time he did it until late hour oo...it has been happening. My husband has been angry over it several times
The worst part is that some of these teachers don't even mark the homework sometimes...lazy beings..lol
Indirectly substituting their work for homework..lol
Yesoo... their lives shouldn't be tied up to academic activities alone
Hah... so after all the stress, they still won't mark it? Omo... wahala go dae ooo! On top school fees that you're paying!
They better have an explanation for this laziness!
Knowing limits is surely key…bombarding the students with so much home work is not good. They need time to rest after a strenuous day at school they would also be putting stress on the parents who too must have had a strenuous day too, hence moderation is really needed
I don't like the stress I go through daily because of this homework, as if they sent me back to school again 😃
🤣🤣🤣
Joy of mother hood😂
Too much homework can definitely overwhelm both students and parents. I agree that the key lies in balance: moderate, well-planned assignments encourage learning without sacrificing mental health
Exactly...I love the word "without sacrificing mental health"
Well planned homework will definitely encourage learning without feeling overwhelming
We can see about it from 2 different perspective but within limit it's good for students to understand their growth in study. It can force students to sit and do study.

Yea..limits, very important otherwise we are drifting from the original goal of giving homework to students
I totally agree for moderation in homework being discharged to learners.
As a teacher with about thirty something students in my class, marking those assignments is quite hectic. So I don't give out homework on a daily basis.
I prefer projects with a span of either one or two weeks intervals given to the child to carry it out before submitting. This way, they still have breaks when they want to.
As a parent, I am grateful for the homework as it keeps children focused but like you said too much of it is tiring.
Moderation is key.
I.love the idea of project..that one spark creativity...also too much of daily homework can be tiring especially when the volume is high
Hopefully our teachers will hear my humble cry..lol
Abi oooo😂😂😂
I understand your position and plight when it comes to assignments for children.
Most teachers just pack the students note filled with assignments, which leave them engaged for almost every time they have at home, leaving them with little or no time for themselves to have a social life or bond with their family.
Not forgetting, how parents have been relegated back to school with the ways they need to guard their ward in all these homework.
Hopefully teachers will learn to restructure how they give their assignment.
I said it before vickoly..help me talk to your fellow teachers to stop suffocating students with homework..lol
The bad aspect of it all is that most of these teachers hardly mark the homework they give
Can u imagine that?
Hahaha! You won't kill me with laughter. Hope you know that I am a trained teacher and I can arrest you. 😂.
My dear the homework is something else. Tok much for the kids and most times it only land on us the parents to do. Hmmm! I have complained and no one seems to understand. Thank God my kids are no more in primary school.
Thanks for sharing
Hahaha 😂😂...I am even tired of complaining
Nowadays, I fear my evening and nights because of homework
Nawaoo oo
That is our system of education in Nigeria
You are very right. There should be moderation in the school homework and I think the only time it could be much is during weekend or holidays as that could make them have ample time to study and also rest, too. Above all, I don’t advocate for the scrapping of homework either because it’s very essential in their academic lives.
Exactly...when the volume of the homework is much during weekends and holidays, is quite understandable
I have taught students before and I don't give them more than one homework per day or 3 in a week. I make sure I have revised the some part of the homework with them before giving it to them.
There should be structures set in place concerning homework. I have witnessed countless time when pupils and students come home with about 4 to 8 homeworks, especially on weekends. It's too much for the kids and their parents/guardians.
School authorities should be able to find a moderation for giving homework to pupils and students to reduce the work load for both the teachers and pupils/students.
It's really tiring to know that some schools finds no wrong in excessive homework to students. It's crazy over here and I hope school authorities will come to this realization someday and start doing better
I hope they do on time. 7 to 9 hours in school is enough already, homework should take up o an hour from any child. Children have other things to do and learn at home.
You are very right. There should be moderation in giving homework to students. I can understand because I am a parent and also a teacher, what we have is based only on private school teachers and their students, because it is not so in the public schools.
We, teachers, are the ones complaining bitterly about the unseriousness attitude of the students and parents towards the homework. If you like, give them from now till the end of the term, they will still not attempt it, and nothing can be done because we are in the era of no case policy🤔
Do you mean teachers in public schools don't bombard the pupils with too much homework?
Ahhh..not doing homework is not good in the part of the learners oo
Just moderation is what we should fight for
Not like the private schools and that's because they won't do it snd with the population in public schools, no teacher would want to try that 🤔
I am still holding on oooo. 😂.
Okay. The overloading is really an issue. I can imagine the mountain of homework and how will that small guy with no axe or digger break it down.
The worst part of it are some teachers giving hard assignments that if they are asked to give an answer to it themselves they won’t know it. But they throw it home for students.
!LOLZ
Just be holding on oo 😂
Don't mind some of those teachers that leave their supposed job to homework

You see that part of giving student too much homework . Some teachers are very good in doing that and sometimes is not even the teacher fault but they owner of school instructions
My dear..I wonder if they want to prove a point with the homework or if it's normal
Most parents end up doing their kids homework for the because at the end of the day, the kids would even sleep off without being done with their homework.
Homework isn’t supposed to suffocate a child but help them revise what was learnt in school.
Exactly 💯...these teachers sometimes are indirectly giving parents the homework
It's tiring
Hehe. Sorry
Those teachers are definitely over doing things and it’s not nice, lol. They better give homework with the aim of helping students love studying and not to punish them because it seems that’s their aim of giving homework these days.
Hehehe.. their aim isn't seating well with nkem, lol
They better rethink and choose a balance approach.lol
Hahaha, they better do that.
