One other reason I prefer going to the supermarket is because it is difficult to find a rude attendant because they have a management who keeps them in check in dealing with customers which the general market doesn’t have.
One day, I decided to patronize the general market, especially the elderly, so that they would sell their items fast and head home because I feel bad seeing the elderly selling items at the market. It’s a means of survival for them, I know, and that’s why I decided to patronize them on this particular day.
I wanted to buy fruit. I saw a young man selling, but there were more elderly women there, so I chose to patronize one of them and men did I regret in less than five minutes.
“good afternoon, ma”, I said to the oldest woman I chose to patronize who was actively having a chitchat with another woman who was attending to her customer even though she was having a conversation.
At first, I thought she was deaf because I was totally ignored for the first three minutes that I stood there and greeted. The last time I talked, it was almost a scream. “I want to buy apples”, I said, and she responded, “ehn, pick the ones you want to buy now, or can’t you see that I’m having an important conversation?”
An important conversation with another vendor that was making sure her customer was satisfied while you yelled at yours? Well, if there’s anything I hate, disrespect and non-challance are part of it, and those are traits that I dread the most in vendors.
The moment I sense an iota of rudeness in a vendor, I run and never look back forever and ever, and that was what I did with this woman. From the way she talked to me, it seemed she wasn’t that interested in selling, so I just moved to the next available person.
“How much do you sell apples?”, I asked, and she mentioned the price. I picked like five apples, and requested a nylon to pack and she said, “I don’t sell with nylons”. In my mind, I was like, is she for real? Because tell me why I would buy five apples, and I have to put them on my hands all the way home.
At this point, I realized that it was a bad decision that I decided to patronize these women. It felt like the biggest mistake in my life that day because earlier, I would’ve stopped to patronize the young man who looked friendly and smiled most of the time.
Maybe when I meet a rude supermarket attendant, I will have reservations about them too, but for now, the rudeness and non-challance of some market women deserves some real study.
