Growing up in my country Nigeria has given me a lot of memories to keep and lots and lots of stories awaiting the ears of my kids. One major reason for this is because of holidays. Growing up, we'd always pray for any slight holiday because it meant a day off from school and for that day, we get to spend it with friends playing and making memories.
Before we continue, let's just take a moment to appreciate the hive-learner community for their initiative and for the opportunity to air our mind on a holiday tradition that needs to be changed. This is a piece for the second weekly writing challenge hosted by hive-learners.
There are over 21 different holidays recorded in my country. One more special and unique than the other. The excitements and buzz of an holiday is all dependent on what the holiday is about (but not for some ladies. They will try and add billings into it. lolz😅😅) like for instance, the vibe for independence can't be the same for valentine and stuff like that. but there is one major thing that consciously or subconsciously we do and it has passed down from generations to generations and has typically now become a tradition that if a family doesn't do this, he/she can be tagged a castaway.
RICE
Yes you read it right. I said RICE. The tradition of cooking rice on holidays is a thing that makes me wonder if the remaining food produce don't get jealous most times. If we were to rank the food produce right now, Rice will be a royal blood not to talk about the one that is called fried rice. Little do people know that preparing fried rice is not that expensive but if you get to my house right as a student and you see me eating fried rice, the next thing you will call me is "IDAN""ODOGWU""BOSSSSSS".
This tradition of cooking only rice for the festive season is one tradition I plan to break in my own time. I can cook other things but it most not always have to be rice. The annoying thing is that some people will cook rice for Christmas and still prepare it again for new year. To students, aren't you tired of eating rice? before the break, all you ate in school was Rice, bread, beans, spaghetti now getting home you still joined to eat rice forgetting that from next week you are still going to start your routine again.
So guys, there you have it. Personally, I feel we should explore other options probably that will give way for the price of rice to reduce significantly. I would have loved to speak on the tradition of hiking prices of all items during festive seasons but I will just write from a place of anger and this could for a thousand words. I will leave others to do justice to it.
I hope with these few points of mine, I have been able to convince you and not confuse you on reasons why you should let rice breath.
So famz mii. I guess that’s all for now. Let me know in the comment section if you agree or not and what works best for you. 👌👌👌

Im just noticing this now because you said it. Rice is a food prepared by most family during Christmas. Children are ready to disturb their fathers with annoying tune of cries if he misses to purchase Christmas rice, lol.
Well, I think it has become a part of us though.
Thank you for sharing

I broke the rice tradition in my home and cook afang soup for Christmas, I'm so damn tired of rice and its even more expensive now
Exactly. Why must it be rice.
Afang soup 🤤🤤🤤 should I bring my cooler??
Pounded yam and Egusi was it for me this year.
Glad to see that our generation is making history 🤣🤣🤣
Seriously ,it is really more of like a tradition, rice has always been the favorite food to eat on every Christmas celebration .thanks for sharing
Well it is a believe that rice is one food that we dim presentable and most occasions cook rice to serve their guest We are all used to our traditional meals like Amala and the likes, we eat them everyday infact.
You may not mind sharing fufu festivities that is only if you wish to incur neighbors rumors. Rice is presentable and economical compared to other food.
But recently we have passed this honour pounded yam
Rice is a common food and easy to cook plus, who does not like Nigerian Jollof especially when the pot is allowed to burn a little.
Fried rice is something I like eating also.
I don't want to imagine spaghetti as a Christmas food. 😂😂😂
I'm not disputing the fact that rice is not nice but don't you get tired of eating same thing over and over??
Forget Spaghetti, imagine beans 🤣🤣🤣
Beans on Christmas day?
I prefer pounded yam
Lolz was just joking though
😂😂😂
Alright
Thanks for stopping by
You're welcome
🤣🤣🤣
I still don't know who to ask that question to get a good answer 😂
Who really did?
I wonder sometimes how rice got this popular even when the prices hiked, it didn't lose it's popularity.
And there are more delicious meals than rice o 😂
A lot of meals better ooooo. I guess it's something we are used to in Nigeria already and Nigerians don't like breaking traditions.
Thanks for stopping by 😊😊😊
People demands for rice too much 😞 and that goes along way to affect us. Well not just rice alone but then the cost of rice is really too much.
Ones there's a lot of demand, the price surely increases. What other alternative can you think of??
