There is a power of darkness that operates in every person born into this world. It is not learned through experience or picked up from one’s environment — it is inherited. Passed down from the first man, Adam, this nature is what the Bible calls the Adamic nature: a corrupt, sinful seed that is hostile to God and cannot align with His divine will.
The Nature of Sin and Death
This Adamic nature is more than just bad behavior — it is a spiritual condition of the soul. It is the very nature of sin and death, which entered through Adam’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden.
“Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses…” – Romans 5:14
This death wasn’t just physical — it was spiritual: a separation from God. From the moment of Adam’s fall, the human race was plunged into darkness, and that nature continues to reproduce itself in every generation.
The Adamic nature is:
Carnal
Rebellious
Self-centered
Naturally aligned with the world’s patterns
It doesn’t need to be taught how to sin — it does so by default. It lies, steals, hates, lusts, and cheats without formal training. This is the fallen nature at work.
Evidence in the Innocence of Childhood
Have you ever noticed that even a child as young as two years old can lie or take something that isn’t theirs? These actions often happen without anyone teaching them how. It’s not a parenting failure — it’s a spiritual reality. Children raised in the most morally upright homes still show signs of selfishness, disobedience, and rebellion.
Why? Because sin is not just taught — it is inherited.
This sin nature begins to manifest subtly, even before a child reaches what we call the “age of accountability,” when conscience and moral responsibility begin to take form.
The Reign of Death and the Cry for Redemption
From Adam to Moses, death reigned. That reign was more than biological death — it was the rule of sin, the dominion of darkness over every human life. Paul echoes this struggle in Romans 7:19:
“For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.”
This inner battle between the desire to do good and the natural pull toward sin is evidence of the Adamic nature in action. The only cure is found in Jesus Christ.
“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” – 1 John 3:8
Jesus came to break the cycle, to replace the Adamic nature with a divine nature, making it possible for man to walk in righteousness.
What Must We Do? A Call to Transformation
You cannot educate the Adamic nature away. You cannot silence it with morality or suppress it with wealth. It must be put to death through the cross of Christ and replaced with a new birth.
To overcome the Adamic nature:
Acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus Christ
Receive the new birth – “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” – John 3:3
Grow your human spirit through:
Daily study of the Word
Consistent fellowship with the Holy Spirit
A lifestyle of prayer and obedience
Until this process begins, the power of darkness continues to rule — no matter how outwardly moral or religious a person may appear.
Final Thoughts: Victory Begins with Christ
The battle between light and darkness begins at birth, but victory begins at the cross. Though the Adamic nature is inherited, it does not have to reign.
In Christ, we are offered:
A new heart
A renewed mind
A regenerated spirit
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
Reflection:
Have you received the new nature in Christ?
Is the power of darkness still ruling in your life?
Are you feeding the Adamic nature or starving it through obedience and surrender?
Let today be your turning point. Choose life. Choose light. Choose Christ.
