Walking Upon an 18th Century Fortress in Tenerife🥾🏰🌊 [ESP-ENG]

Welcome to my blog! In this third part, which I have finally published, I share with you the last part of what was my walk in the coastal town of Puerto de la Cruz, located in the north of the island of Tenerife. In my first post in the #WednesdayWalk community, I shared with you views of my walk through the Muelle de Puerto de La Cruz, which was actually functioning centuries ago, when boats were made of wood and pirates plagued the seas.

En esta tercera parte, que finalmente he publicado, les comparto la última parte de lo que fue mi caminata en la ciudad costera de Puerto de la Cruz, ubicada al norte de la Isla de Tenerife. En mi primera publicación en la comunidad #WednesdayWalk les compartía vistas de mi caminata a través del Muelle de Puerto de La Cruz, que en realidad funcionaba cabalmente hablando siglos atrás, cuando las embarcaciones eran de madera y había piratas asolando los mares.

In the second part, I shared with you my visit to an adorable little Museum dedicated to fishermen, located very close to the pier. The walk was not interrupted but rather continued inside the museum's channeled and self-guided corridors. It was in good part thanks to the pirates of yesteryear that I bring you this third part, since the fortress located right next to the pier was built to defend the city from invaders and attackers, among them, pirates.

En la segunda parte, les compartía mi visita a un pequeño y adorable Museo dedicado a los pescadores, ubicado muy cerca de dicho muelle. La caminata no se interrumpió sino que mas bien continuó dentro de los pasillos canaliados y autoguiados del museo. En buena parte fue gracias a los piratas de antaño que les traigo esta tercera parte, ya que la fortaleza ubicada justo al lado del muelle fue construida para defender la ciudad de invasores y atacantes, entre ellos, piratas.

This fortress is called Batería de Santa Bárbara and was built in the 18th century. It is one of the fortifications that this city had. Speaking of the walk, just after finishing the tour of the pier, you head towards Plaza Europa and immediately come across a curious statue of a woman with a basket of fish and octopus on her head.

Esta Fortaleza recibe el nombre de Batería de Santa Bárbara y fue edificada en el Siglo XVIII. Es una de las fortificaciones que tuvo esta ciudad, y ya les había compartido fotos de otra de ellas en esta publicación: Castillo de San Felipe – Visiting a Castle from the XVII century in Puerto de La Cruz🏰🇮🇨🌍. Hablando de la caminata, justo después de terminar el recorrido por el muelle, te diriges hacia la Plaza Europa e inmediatamente te topas con una curiosa estatua de una mujer con una canasta de pescados y pulpos en la cabeza.

After a short walk, you reach the Plaza Europa, from which you can access a small staircase to the top of the fortress, where you can see up close a battery of ancient cannons that in another era would have been considered advanced weapons. The views there are very good, not only towards the sea but also towards the city, with the Teide Volcano in the background. In one of the corners of the place is a sentry box of the fortress, which you can access and see what former soldiers saw from there. You can see in the two photos below the view from two of the openings of the sentry box. It is interesting how one of them provides a strategic view of the outer wall.

Luego de caminar un poco, llegas a la Plaza Europa, desde la cual puedes acceder mediante unas pequeñas escaleras a la cima de la fortaleza, en donde puedes ver de cerca una batería de antiguos cañones que en otra época hubieran sido considerados armas avanzadas. Las vistas allí son muy buenas, no solo hacia el mar sino hacia la ciudad, con el Volcán Teide de fondo. En una de las esquinas del lugar se encuentra una garita de vigilacia de la fortaleza, a la cual puedes acceder y ver lo que antiguos soldados veían desde allí. Puedes ver en las dos fotos de abajo la vista que hay desde dos de las aberturas de la garita. Es interesante como una de ellas provee una vista estratégica del muro externo.

Continuing with the walk, we went along the top of the fortress to another area where there were two additional cannons and a privileged view of the city. This passage passes above the level of the Plaza Europa and reaches a viewpoint very close to the City Hall building. There is also a telescope which you can use if you deposit a 1 euro coin.

Continuando con la caminata, recorrimos la parte superior de la fortaleza hacia otra zona en donde hay dos cañones adicionales y una vista privilegiada de la ciudad. Este pasaje pasa por encima del nivel de la Plaza Europa, y llega hasta un mirador muy cercano al edificio del Ayuntamiento de la ciudad. Allí hay también un telescopio el cual puedes utilizar si depositas una moneda de 1 euro.

At this other end of the hill is an area dedicated to fishing, which is called Zona de Pesca de San Telmo. From the top, there are some very beautiful views of the city of Puerto de La Cruz in its colonial area next to more modern buildings. The fortress covers a considerable area and is well-preserved, at least from the outside. It is not possible to access its interiors, although some doors can be seen to remain closed.

En este otro extremo de la fotaleza se encuentra un área dedicada a la pesca, la cual se llama Zona de Pesca de San Telmo. Desde la parte alta hay algunas vistas muy hermosas de la ciudad de Puerto de La Cruz en su zona colonial junto a edificios más modernos. La fortaleza abarca un área considerable y se nota un buen grado de conservación, al menos desde afuera. No es posible acceder a sus interiores, aunque se observan algunas puertas que permanecen cerradas.

On one of the rocks outside the fortress, a white bird could be seen, apparently waiting patiently for some unsuspecting fish to appear in the puddles that form when the waves crash.

En una de las rocas a las afueras de la fortaleza se podía observar un ave de color blanco, aparentemente esperando pacientemente que apareciece algún desprevenido pez en los charcos que se forman cuando chocan las olas.

One of my favorite parts of this walk was passing through a stone wall and an ancient wooden gate that makes us imagine ancient scenes of medieval battles. I would like to know what is behind these doors but perhaps the interior is not suitable for sightseeing or is under restoration.

Una de mis partes favoritas de esta caminata fue el paso por una pared de pieddra y una antigua puerta de madera que nos hace imaginar escenas antiguas de batallas medievales. Me gustaría saber qué hay detrás de estas puertas pero quizás el nterior no esté apto para visitas turísticas o esté en restauración.

After visiting this large free area, a staircase connects us back to the Plaza Europa. There you can see more doors, some of wood and others of bars that lead to the interior of the fortress. It is a very picturesque square, although I think it could be better. This walk really ends here, having already toured the upper part and surroundings of the fortress and the Plaza Europa.

Luego de visitar esta amplia zona libre, una escalera nos conecta de nuevo con la Plaza Europa. Allí esposible observar más puertas, unas de madera y otras de barrotes que conducen al interior de la fortaleza. Es una plaza muy pintoresca, aunque creo que podría ser mejor. Esta caminata realmente termina aquí, habiendo ya recorrido la parte superior y alrededores de la fortaleza y la Plaza Europa.

This last photo is of an old building located right next to Plaza Europa. It is a very special place, especially from a historical point of view. In a future post I will be telling you more about this house, who it belonged to, and what is being done there today. I hope you enjoyed this walk and these photos.
