Wednesday Architectural Walk to Find the Beauty of Brutalism in the close Suburbs of Paris [ENG - FR]

in Wednesday Walklast year

Hello dear midweek wanderers, I hope you are doing fine ! Today, on my side, I would like to show you a small part of this northern border zone between the city and the suburbs, even if this difference is not so easy to make.

I doubt that anyone who comes to visit Paris would bother to come here, or that a facetious guide would bring them here ! It's not really considered an 'in' place, famous, trendy, and yet people live here, things happen... and so one should be able to detect some beauty in these recent constructions !

During this walk, we will drift between the Porte de la Chapelle and the Porte d'Aubervilliers, along this very busy boulevard where the tramway also passes.

DSC_0177.JPG

This is an example of one of the buildings that has come up in the last two, three years. I realize that a few years ago, I was sometimes more critical, acerbic at times, whereas now, I only sometimes enjoy being a spectator.

DSC_0174.JPG

Here are the bases, the concrete pillars, positioned in triangulation. I found this place very graphic, with their shape, the grid and the graffiti on each of them...

DSC_0183.JPG

Architecture was another one of those subjects I hadn't tried with this new camera, but I'm not really equipped (in knowledge) for distortion editing ! I'll have to go and read up on it and watch some tutorials :D

DSC_0184.JPG

DSC_0185.JPG

By nature and aesthetic taste, I am not inclined to really like these buildings, which I find impossible to compare with a beautiful ashlar ensemble, and for once, the fact that I am looking for a part of their beauty allows me to appreciate precisely what is beautiful, well thought out or practical in these constructions.

DSC_0191.JPG

Traces of natural life are rare in this world of concrete, glass and metal. Sometimes some plants are on the balconies... and a bird slips into the frame ^^ !

DSC_0196.JPG

DSC_0202.JPG

This set is perhaps my favorite... and yet it is the one I would least like to live in. I find it monolithic and threatening, but at the same time graphically very beautiful !

DSC_0206.JPG

I see a cat and think of Miyazaki. But he ignores me completely and I don't blame him... Me too, with so much kibble, I won't be able to understand anything ! But it's a bit of sweetness before the next part as we continue towards the Porte d'Aubervilliers.

DSC_0209.JPG

DSC_0216.JPG

A bit rough, isn't it...?

DSC_0219.JPG

DSC_0222.JPG

Fortunately, some seagulls are waiting for us in ambush on each of the lampposts of the square.

DSC_0229.JPG

In the distance, you can see the 'Gare Rosa Parks' stop and behind it, these buildings whose design I also kind of like.

DSC_0231.JPG

DSC_0232.JPG

Another brutalist structure with sheet metal corners, repeating window patterns and concrete pillars that add dynamism.

DSC_0237.JPG

DSC_0239.JPG

DSC_0238.JPG

On the way back, on the same wall, I pick up a few messages left for attentive passers-by: "Gang 18" is for the 18th arrondissement and "Justice for Adama" is in memory of a young man who died after a chase with the police... The last message made me laugh at first for the few spelling mistakes it contained, and then when I concentrated on the message, I found it quite appropriate for this walk :

"The beauty of life depends on your look"

I hope you enjoyed this walk with me, as well as discovering what Paris is really like, far from the clichés and postcard ideas !

Thank you for your visit, I wish you a very nice day,

DSC_0174.JPG

<3

Wow these are great shots! It may not be your favorite type of architecture, you did a great job of capturing and sharing it with us!

Many thanks @sjarvie5 :) I find it interesting to practice on things that are not our favorites... It keep the objects at a certain distance and maybe, the eye is a bit more objective ?

Thanks you for you visit 😇 ✌️

cool to see a par topf Paris less well known and not a popular spot for tourist, these are the kind of places when I visited a City I had not been to before and gives you a real feel of city life I think

Thanks for joining the Wednesday, its always fun for me to visit the walks from all around the world, getting a feel for communities where people live and what they see on their daily walks

For sure, one good idea could be to go from this close suburbs until the center of the town in one unique walk... I this way or the other :) Will maybe try this soon 😉

Take good care dear @tattoodjay ✌️

Nice linework Attn!

Thanks you ! I liked to try a bit more architectural representation, a complete other mood than other practices :)

These are truly beautiful buildings. I must say that the architects involved did a very good job.

And you found some great examples of it.
Love the angles you captured. Very arty 😉😎 it fits the architecture so well.
Thanks for sharing your walk @anttn 👋🏻😊 have a great Wednesday!

I had no preconception about this area, but it's commonly accepted that is not the first you'll visit, so I was myself surprised ! Plus I really enjoyed taking building in pictures... It's not like they will flew away ^^
Thanks you for visiting dear, I hope you're well 🤞🌟

Cool that some areas still can surprise you. I can imagine it’s not high on the list to visit first.
But it is so worth it, as long as one “sees” 😎
Hahaha nope they won’t fly away… !LOL
You are welcome, I am @anttn finally I started posting again and even managed an update.
So good to be on-line again.
Have a wonderful evening 👋🏻😘

it's a very beautiful building, the architecture really catches the eye. If I have the chance I also want to go there to see it in person

Indeed ! Would be also interesting to see from the top..!
Thanks you for visiting dear :) Take good care ✌️

You're welcome 😊

These are cool shots! I enjoyed the look-up shots of the tall buildings. I find it fascinating that the buildings that seem to be rectangular in shape have angles or twists on their facade...

I think the design approach is clever, the twisting of the floor levels creates an overhang that serves as a protection against harsh sunlight during noon time/early afternoon.

Excellent architectural analysis indeed 😉 !
This particular one arrived at the end and I was happy to have pushed a bit further, one of my favorites too :) I'm glad you enjoyed the tour and I thanks you for taking the time to, hoping you're doing good too 🤞 🍀

Yeah, I'm doing great :)

I saw your new post showcasing the design of Jean Nouvel, a beautiful piece of architecture :)
