Wandering and Wondering at MindScapes

When was the last time you let your mind wander? I had one of those moments some weeks ago and can't wait to have more of them in the future.

It happened on the same day when I went out with a couple of friends from Hive PH (@romeskie, @lhes, @cindee08, @demotry, and @bananzell) and had a mini-field trip in Ayala Museum! I haven't written my POV of the trip yet but feel free to check out Ate Lhes' and Ate Rome's posts.

After parting ways with them, I ventured into an adventure of my own. To where exactly? I don't know. I was on a very tight budget, and for the most part, I had to make sure I don't get too derailed because I might miss my bus!

As I started to walk to my destination, I also watched the sea of people moving in the same direction. What's in their mind? Are they wandering aimlessly as I currently am? It was a Sunday after all...

Minutes of walking at different paces and people-watching got me to Ayala Museum's free admission exhibit, MindScapes. I get giddy whenever I see art so I went inside the gallery after seeing that I still have ample time to take things slowly. And did I say it's for frrrreee?!

The exhibit is running from June 3 - October 29, 2023, and it features select work from Pilipinas Shell's National Student Art Competition Winners. At the time of typing this post, I wonder where's the rest of the collection stored. Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation donated these works to Ayala Museum and they even have a catalogue for sale in Ayala Museum's shop.

There were different types of art in the exhibit and they fell under certain categories - watercolor, oil/acrylic, and sculpture. All a sight for sore eyes.

From Left to Right: Transfiguration; Trapped in a World of Poverty; Maski Wala Nang Bulaklak

The first set that greeted me was these watercolor paintings. I had to come closer to the second piece as the details were so intricate and my mind can't wrap around the fact that watercolor was used on it. (I have no idea how people can manipulate watercolor, really...) Bais' Transfiguration intrigued me among the three. Is it the canvas size? Is it the controlled mess?

Agas_MS.jpg

Onto more intriguing pieces... I stared at Agas for a long time. For context, agas means miscarriage in Filipino. I'm unsure if I should correlate it with abortion. What's with this, though? Is it right to assume that the fetus is being pulled out from the body? Look at the hands and feet too... What's the risk of them falling apart? Pardon me, my thoughts are so abstract and so technical at the same time.

This may be smaller than other Ayala Museum exhibits, but it sure has a lot of pieces to look at!

There was not much of a crowd as it was a rainy afternoon. Everyone else was probably busy thinking about what's for dinner or how shall they be spending their evening in the malls. The people looking around the gallery though were pretty interested in the displays. Some were even having a discussion; exchanging theories of how were the pieces created and/or trading thoughts and feelings about the subject in front of them. The overheard conversations made me wish I had a gallery buddy with me too, but hey, solo adventures are nice too.

One of the perks of being alone is having all the time to study each piece. And I definitely took my sweet time! I snapped close-up details, took videos of some sculptures, and allowed myself to just be in the moment with my racing thoughts - and the lack of them.

I've yet to decide if I want to upload the videos I took since they're merely reference videos for what knows what would I even do in the coming days but let me share some of the close-ups I have in my phone!

Cloud brushstrokes of Mary Grace Tenorio's On Thin Air

Scrunched eyebrows of Jacob Nathaniel Lindo's Self Analysis

Okay, this one's not a close up but I like Eloisa Sanson's Regeneration a lot!

There's absolutely more to see from this exhibit but I like being quite a tease so I'll leave you curious for more! I might actually do another visit so I want to relive the moment and maybe collect some discoveries/realizations that I didn't have from the first one.

Do you like hanging around art galleries?

This is my first #WednesdayWalk post! Many thanks @tattoodjay for this initiative.

Wow!! For free?! Really?! That’s like a gem! Yay!

Yeee, pero just this part of the museum! Tapos they only run for a limited amount of time.

More on September daw!

This reminds me of National museum, so many sculpture and arts but since Hindi ako artist, medyo di ko maappreciate 😬.

Alay lakad tayo sa September! 😂

You don't have to be an artist para maappreciate yung art pieces. There's more to it! Minsan lang mas masaya pag may guide or may ka-chikahan habang nagfifieldtrip hehehe

Exhibition is good to our mind. I love to let my mind wondering about something on that similar event.

Art work there are awesome. Makes my mind wonder about the real meaning too. But, we never know what exactly the creator want to say 🙂

we never know what exactly the creator want to say

This is so true! It's not like we'd be meeting these creators all the time and we could ask them about it. It's fun to have our own interpretation!

indeed, so much fun! 🤩🤩🤩

Ang sad naman nung statue na yun sobrang nakasimangot. tumbling ka sa tabi nyan tapos sabihan mo ng 'bakit malunkot ang beshie ko' wahahahaha.

I just noticed that first set or arts in one picture, pansin ko lang ganda ng pagkakakuha mo uwu. And the art, omg. I'm not good with art pero super naappreciate ko talaga ang beauty nila. And amaze na amaze din ako sa mga artist like you. If only I have skills eeh, kaso tamad din akong aralin sya so saduuuu.

Anyways, how I wish meron nyan dito samin, I mean mga nag e exhibit ddin ng arts ba or sculpture and anything. Puntahan ko talaga yon, sayang.

Wahaha angle angle lang, Ruffaaa~

Sabi nung iba hardwork can beat talent. Di rin ako artist pero hinihintay kong dumating yung sipag ko. HAHAHA

Hahayyy. Balang araw, sana magkaroon kayo ng events catering to the arts!!

I love the three water color paintings too. and my most fave part is the Cloud brushes. You are so lucky to have a wonderful walk there for free. How I wish I was an artist too. lol. Happy wondering and wandering!

I'm not an artist too, Ate! And I wish art is more accessible to the public, not only in NCR but the rest of the Philippines. We tend to forget how to appreciate local creative works and their artists. :c
