A Night Walk!

My adventurous friend did it! He made me hike in the mountains at night, with the excuse that the moon would be full and there would be an eclipse; he knows that the stars are one of my weaknesses. We started our hike a bit earlier, before the sun went down, so we started the night enjoying the reddish sunset over western Caracas.

¡Mi amigo de aventuras lo logró! Me hizo caminar en la montaña en la noche, con la excusa de que la luna estaría llena y habría eclipse; él sabe que los astros son una de mis debilidades. Comenzamos nuestra caminata un poco más temprano, antes de que se pusiera el sol, así que comenzamos la noche disfrutando del rojizo atardecer sobre el oeste de Caracas.

It had been a while since I had climbed with him, and while I take it as a healthy walk, but with many pictures of the road, he sees it as part of his cardiovascular training, since he is an athlete. I accept that it gives me a chance to take lots of pictures and rest as often as I can, but in return he convinces me to walk more kilometers up.

Tenía tiempo que no subía junto a él, y es que mientras yo lo tomo como un paseo saludable, pero con muchas fotografías del camino, él lo ve como parte de su entrenamiento cardiovascular, ya que es un atleta. Acepto que me da oportunidad de tomar muchas fotos y descansar todas las veces que pueda, pero a cambio me convence para caminar más kilómetros hacia arriba.

That first picture together is at the Corta Fuegos, the daily destination of my walks along the San Bernardino trail. There we were caught in the sunset. I told him that my personal goal was a 1800 meter hike, so he told me to go a little higher so we could capture pictures of the moon. I remember telling him that we might not be able to see the moon at that time, according to my calculations it would rise later, but he ignored me and we continued the adventure.

Esa primera fotografía juntos es en el Corta Fuegos, el destino cotidiano de mis caminatas por el sendero de San Bernardino. Ahí nos agarró la puesta de sol. Le dije que mi meta personal era una caminata de 1800 metros, así que me dijo que subiéramos un poco más para poder capturar fotografías de la luna. Recuerdo que le dije que posiblemente no íbamos a ver la luna a esa hora, según mis cálculos saldría más tarde; igual no me hizo caso y continuamos la aventura.

We thought there would be many people on the road, but no, for meters and meters we walked just he and I, and although the sky was still very clear, I couldn't see the marks on the ground that said where we were going... He told me that the perfect pictures of the city and the moon could be taken from the Avila Cross, that popular attraction that embellishes the mountain especially in December, the cross that we named in one of the songs we recorded in our Christmas album. After I said yes and as we passed a bend cleared of trees, I saw the cross in the distance and realized that it was a long way to go 😵‍💫

Pensamos que habría mucha gente en el camino, pero no, por metros y metros caminamos solo él y yo, y aunque el cielo se veía muy claro aún, no podía ver las marcas en el suelo que decían por donde íbamos... Me dijo que las fotos perfectas de la ciudad y la luna las podríamos tomar desde la Cruz del Ávila, esa popular atracción que embellece la montaña especialmente en Diciembre, la cruz que nombramos en una de las canciones que grabamos en nuestro álbum navideño. Luego de decirle que sí y cuando pasamos por una curva despejada de árboles, vi la cruz a lo lejos y me di cuenta que faltaba muchísimo para llegar a ella 😵‍💫

The cross was over two thousand meters from the trailhead. I admit that I felt a bit tired, but the whole experience was very pleasant. I never imagined I would be up there at night and in fact I have taken this corner of the mountain as a next personal goal, but to go solo later on, together with Douglas doesn't count for much, but his company was very motivating. Another thing I love about climbing at night is that the whole way up was very cool.

La cruz estaba a más de dos mil metros desde la entrada del sendero. Acepto que me sentía algo cansado, pero toda la experiencia fue muy placentera. Nunca imaginé que estaría allá arriba en la noche y de hecho he tomado este rincón de la montaña como una siguiente meta personal, pero para llegar en solitario más adelante, junto a Douglas no cuenta mucho, pero su compañía fue muy motivadora. Otra cosa que amo de subir en la noche es que todo el camino era muy fresco.

It was almost nine o'clock at night and when we finally thought we were going down the moon began to rise in the east. We couldn't wait for it to get that high, so he suggested that we go up a little higher, there was a clear spot up there with a view to the west of the city. He convinced me, and although some dogs came out of nowhere to bark at us (which scared me a lot), we walked about five meters higher, and arrived just below the cable car, with a view of the illuminated Hotel Humbolt at the top.

Eran casi las nueve de la noche y cuando al fin pensamos que bajaríamos la luna comenzó a asomarse hacia el este. No podíamos esperar a que se alzara tanto, así que él me propuso subir un poco más, arriba había un lugar despejado con vista hacia el oeste de la ciudad. Me convenció, y aunque unos perros salieron de la nada a ladrarnos (cosa que me asustó mucho), caminamos unos cinco metros más arriba, y llegamos justo debajo del teleférico, con vista del Hotel Humbolt iluminado en la cima.

I soon discovered that my cell phone would not take the best pictures of the moon; I was a little disappointed, but it didn't hurt my ride. I took a couple more pictures, we rested for a while and then started our way back. These mountain adventures have me in high spirits, sometimes I go alone, sometimes with my wife, sometimes with my friend, and as I finish writing this post I intend to go back and check out one more trail east of the city, not only with my good friend, but also with one of the other tenors of the chorale. Possibly my story for the next Wednesday Walk 😉

Muy pronto descubrí que mi teléfono celular no tomaría las mejores fotografías de la luna; eso me decepcionó un poco, peor no dañó mi paseo. Tomé un par de fotografías más, descansamos un rato y luego comenzamos el camino de regreso. Estas aventuras en la montaña me tienen muy animado, a veces voy solo, a veces con mi esposa, a veces con mi amigo, y al terminar de escribir este post pretendo volver ir a conocer otro sendero más hacia el este de la ciudad, no solo con mi buen amigo, sino también junto a otro de los tenores de la coral. Posiblemente sea mi historia para el próximo Wednesday Walk 😉
