Childhood Memories - Walking Along A Very Familiar Road

in Wednesday Walk2 years ago

I had such a great time at my mom's last week. Even though I was back working after my summer holiday it kind of felt like a bonus holiday because my mom took such good care of me. It's a dream not having to cook 🙂

I went on many walks but today I want to share this specific one. It's a 6-kilometer loop that starts at my mom's house. It was also the route the school bus took every morning when I was growing up so this is a very familiar walk to me.

For those of you who don't know this but I'm from a very small place in Sweden. A village with 700 residents. This village consists of several even smaller villages 🙂

I started here, just outside of my mom's house. What you see in the picture above is also part of my mom's property. My dad has built most of these buildings. When my parents moved there it was just the old barn in the background.

This is just after an uphill. The sandbox is used in wintertime for the road.

It's nice to see that there are still some flowers blooming.

This walk isn't in the forest, I'm walking along a dirt road so there are some houses along the way.

No one lives in this house, it's not really looked after, but it reminds me a bit about the cottage that I want to renovate (that's on my mom's other property, yes I know, a bit confusing).

It actually got quite hot on this walk. It was late afternoon, I went straight after work last Friday.

This is a bus stop. I'm not really up-to-date on the timetable but it's actually not really possible to live in this village if you don't have a car. Growing up there was one bus every other day to the closest small town (with about 7000 residents). As a parent, you really have to drive your kids everywhere.

Now I'm almost back home. It's a small part of this loop that's actually on a bigger road, just for maybe 100 meters. Behind the cape to the left is a beach where we used to swim when we were small.

My mom's house is about 200 meters from the bigger road seen in the last picture. Uphill from there 🙂

And here is the house where my mom lives and where I grew up. (Not the best light to take a picture). My parents moved there when I was one year old so it's the only place I remember really. Actually, my mom went to have a look at this house and my dad was home looking after me, and my mom liked the house so much that they bought it before my dad had even seen the place. He really trusted my mom. I'm still hoping for that kind of love for myself 🙂 They said they had 40 great years together. (For those of you who don't know, my dad passed away 8 years ago).

I feel so grateful that I have such a great relationship with my mom nowadays. I hope she is healthy and lives many more years.

My mom and my youngest (autistic) brother are the only people I see when I visit. I'm not in contact with anyone I was growing up with. It's natural in a way. I left as soon as I could (in high school) and most of my childhood friends still live here or close by. Many got married to each other and started a family at a relatively young age.

I always knew I wanted something else. I couldn't see myself staying. I wanted to explore the world. But even so, I had a happy childhood and in a way, I'm glad I didn't grow up in a city. I learned so much about plants, how to build things, had a lot of space to play and so on.

It's so beautiful where you grew up, and I love the style of houses as well. I just want to step off the path and go into the forest. Thanks for sharing your lovely walk with us @mamrita xxxxx

Haha yes, a lot of forests to choose from 🙂

Thank you, I actually also think so. That it's beautiful.

A lovely 'trip' through memory lane :^)

I grew up in a city with 70,000 people and now I'm living in the countryside, surrouded by villlages the size of your home town. It's interesting how life turns out and where it takes us.

Sending you a hug from The Netherlands

Thank you my friend 🙂

Yes the majority of people grow up in a city, I'm part of a minority really 🙂
